I need suggestions on where I can obtain a semi-circular table for a parlor set-up--a table where I can sit with 3-4 spectators for close-up. What I have in mind is what I've seen in pictures from performances in the Magic Castle. I have found some in furniture stores, but they are quite expensive. Is there a manufacturer that caters to magicians specifically?

I have already checked Tabman Tables but before I consider a custom job, I'd like see what I can get in the mass market.

I got a fold-up table for less than $40 from a Co-op that's got a diameter of 36 inches. It's got a fake wood top and metal legs. I covered it with a cloth and no-one knew how cheap it was.

Why not try Walmart or an outdoor shop in the USA?

That's a good idea. And you can have it in whatever size.

I've considered it, but I'd rather spend my time practicing than manufacturing. I've built things from tree houses to motorcycles and I'm just getting lazier--or wiser.

There are always an assortment of tables on EBAY, perhaps you can look there. I bought a table off of there and am very happy with it.

I'd be willing to make one for you... I'd imagin you want something similar to a dealers table like the ones used in a casino? Probably a nice cherry wood or mahogany with brass accent?

You might try Sam's Club, I believe they sell a semi-circular table with a hard plastic top on an enameled steel frame. It's light but very sturdy and durable, about $40. And if you cover it with a $15 red velveteen fabric remnant, it'll look like something from the Magic Castle (seriously).

Sam's Club also sells a $40 4' long folding table that's two feet wide. It folds down to a two-foot square and has a good carry handle. [This shape might give you even better working angles than a semi-circular table.] Same deal, a hard plastic top on an enameled steel frame, light and very sturdy. The telescoping legs are also adjustable to three different heights, so you can work standing or sitting.

I have used one of these folding tables for the past three years as a pitch table for a Svengali Pitch; it still looks brand new. And because the frame is steel, you can also use it as a holdout for magnetic coins, or to hold a paper clip with a small magnet, as an IT anchor, etc.

BTW, if you do cover these tables with a cloth, I suggest putting some rubberized shelf/drawer liner underneath the cloth. This will prevent the cloth from sliding around, and will also give you a good soft surface that makes it easy to pick up coins and cards (it also helps to prevent gaffed coins from talking). You can get this stuff in 4' rolls at any supermarket; the medium thickness seems to be the most useful and durable. SETH

Can't help with a source for tables but wanted to say that Bryans work looks wonderful.

I believe Bryan can do an excellent custom table for you, fmpilot.

If you really, really, really must do this on the cheap, buy a circular table and saw it in half with a Skilsaw. Then put a leg on each of the corners and one in front.

Bear in mind that there is very little you can do to something like this to make it look really nice, though.
