I perform on the Pier in Santa Monica and at one point I had out my cups to be checked out and after I get the first two back I have the third one thrown to me. I usually turn around so that I am not backed up against the water but today I figured it's just a young girl, and I have never had any close call, so I just stood where I was. And wouldn't you know the cup goes flying off to the side way over my head and drops right into the pacific. I used to use Sherwood cups until I dropped one and now it doesn't stack and now I just lost one of my Phoenix cups. I guess I am just meant to do only a two cup routine. I made a pretty good hat and was only bummed for a little while. I figured I would lose a ball or the wand long before I lost the cup.

Did you at least get an apology? I'd love to know how you reacted and kept the show going.

Sorry about that. At least you will have another full set soon.

I think I would have all three handed to me from now on, and forget the throwing part.

I did get an apology, the family felt really bad. I just stared at the table for a couple of beats and then said my show is going to be a third shorter. Since I didn't get mad people didn't get uncomfortable. I laughed at it and in return so did they. I have a two cup routine I do too so I just went into that one. The crowd seemed to be impressed that I went with it and like I said I got a nice hat which always helps. Maybe I should get a bunch of cheap cup sets and have one thrown over board for every show.

I had a cup dropped once. Fortunately is was a Bazar de Magia, so when I upgraded to my Riser Traditionals, I had learned NEVER to have them thrown - always gently handed.

Hey Leeman,... just for the record, let me get this straight. Did she throw it TO you,.. or AT you?
Hey, in a hundred years or so, when Mike Caveney is writing your biographical tribute; he'll probably document the `archiological search' of the Santa Monica Bay, for this one cup! Some great master once said, "Never hand out your props,.. especially when preforming `the knife thru the arm'." I guess I'm beginning to see the light. hmm, I wonder if this has anything to do with the old theater phrase, "I took a dive tonight." ? This could be the start of a new `hat line' tho, "Please thro money, not...." all the best, gallagher |

I think I might have gotten wet going in after it.
I was fishing a few years ago and had my fairly expensive fishing rod get launched into the lake by a fish. I dove in after it. When I came up I had my rod and the fish. My buddies got a real good laugh on me. Got my pole back though...
It's not the size of the wand that matters, it's the "magic" in it...

The thought of jumping in after it was quickly pushed aside by the thought of breaking my legs since I don't think the water is too deep where it went in, maybe 5-6 feet. the problem is that it was too near the pier to swim out and get it. Maybe I'll get together a crack squad and go for a night time rescue mission for the cup. Anybody an current or ex-NAVY SEAL? Or if you have a trained pet seal that might work too.
It was a young girl, maybe 10 and she threw the cup towards me, just a couple feet to my right and a bit high and since I am a slow, slow fellow it got past me. So with the cup also went my dream of being a great goalie. |

Time to look for some bargains. I have a set of johnson cups I'd hate to loose but I got them pretty cheap. I love handing out my cups. People like checking them out. Just use cheap cups, get good bargain cups when you can, use them, and keep on truckin'. Props are meant to be used. Not sitting around gathering dust. When you're old and can't work anymore you'll be much happier with a dinged up set of cups than one that's been under glass for 40 years never to have seen the light of day.
Just don't take Sherwoods to the pier for goodness sake. I don't have my Sherwood cups but when I did I made sure to put on my todo list a routine that was close to my standard routine but did not involve the cups coming in contact with each other, to keep them from getting banged up.

After reading your post Some Days. . . you just can't win I think that is the most generous thing I have seen it just proves what a GREAT person you are. I think you should change your above title to I am a winner for humanitarian kind. I just bought a set of Phoenix cups from you and they are awesome it makes me feel so good to buy cups from such a stand up guy. I think all Magic Café members should take this into account when purchasing cups!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks |
