Hi Homer!
After being truly inspired by CoinOne, I´m on my way to train coin magic. Therefore I want to buy a set of silver dollars with a fitting s***l. Since I´m located in Austria, it´s not so easy to contact the manufacturers and do some research... What would you suggest?: *) Lassen *) Schoolcraft *) Johnson (you only get the s***l - it´s hard to get fitting dollars in Austria) *) Cups and Balls from the Netherlands offer Morgan dollar sets too...do you know the company? (www.cupsandballs.nl) Thank you for your advice, since I want to buy one good set once and that´s it. Greetings from Vienna and keep up your fantastic work. Philip |

Honestly, if you can see the coins in person, that is your best bet - no matter who is making them. Everyone you mentioned does great work. I personally go with Schoolcraft because I have had the opportunity to sit with him and watch him work as well as look through all his designs. This allows me to handpick exactly what I want. I pay more than most, but I get to see exactly what I'm buying first.

Hi Homer!
Thanks for the reply! Of course i´d love to compare the sets in realitas but the shops in Austria don´t even have Dollar coins at all ... so I have to do my research like that before I order a set, that hopefully accompanies me for a longer period of time... Please tell me once again: You also know the coins and s***ls from "Cups and Balls" (www.cupsandballs.nl)? If yes and you liked them, I would love to rely on your opinion and order my Morgan-Dollar-set (in soft quality) from them... it would be relatively cheap because they are located in Europe and I would´nt have to pay a high shipping fee. Thank you for your time, Philip |

The work by Cups and Balls I saw at a recent convention looked very nice. I still think its important to see the work if you can. Any of the manufacturers you mentioned have good quality work and I don't think you will be disappointed. Just remember, when it comes to machining old coins, no two pieces will ever be exactly the same. You have to accept that there will be variations between sets. Go with the European company and just open up good communication lines so you will increase the chances of getting what you want.

Homer, do you have a preference for expanded or unexpanded? Does it change based on the routine?

I used an expanded most of my life. My last couple of sets have been standard shells with cut-down coins. Leaves you with a clean look when nested. When I performed regularly it was with my only shell, which was a Johnson Products expanded walking liberty. It was all I had at the time. That set was stolen in 1998. I use dollars on my DVD's because I feel they are more visible for the type of magic I'm doing, while sacrificing some naturalness since I have short fingers and thick hands (besides being like petrified rock).
I do not have a preference for expanded or unexpanded. The only thing I can say is with an expanded shell, you can palm it off and know for a fact that you are handing out 4 regular coins to be examined. And, if the spectator drops and damages one, you can easily get a substitute. Shell-cut down combos are more precise, and if you ruin a coin you need to get another from your manufacturer. Homer |

Are your coins stained ? I have Schoolcraft coins and yours look darker around the edges of the face, date nd eagle. Like if they had shadows. I like the look lot. First time I watched Coin One I used a marker to stained mines but it did not work. Any suggestions ? I would appreciate it. Joaquin |

Looking forward to see you when have chance to watch Copperfield's shows again in near future, or touring to Hong Kong.

Striahght bleach works best.
By adding water you slow down the process. Use Steel wool on a dry coin to get the oxydation off. Homer suggested it on his cointwo video and I tired it with water solution and without and it is definatly better without the water solution. If you have anysolution left on the coin it will rust the wool pretty quickly and turn your coin more of a brownish color. Of course if your hands are like homer's then you can just rub them out with your bare hands...hahaha Mobius |

While we're on the topic of different coins...
Homer, have you ever handled the 1903-1909 silver Filipino pesos? Those feel freaking amazing! They're almost the size of Morgans but not quite (1mm smaller I believe). Plus it's pretty cool being Filipino and using Filipino coins when I do magic. I had Jamie make me a Dean's set out of them and it's amazing. |

That sounds great - Silver Filipino Coins... I want some! Maybe I can do a trick where I do a coin toss and ask them to call it while I flip.
