My apologies to Mr. Chris Kavanaugh for beating you to this:
A spectator peeks at a card in the pack, in this case the Two of Diamonds. The miracle worker claims he can cut to the card the spectator has in mind, but when the performer cuts the pack and the card is turned over, it's the THREE of Diamonds. Confident he can "still work with it," the magician has the spectator sign her name across the back of the Three. For a few moments, the magician mysteriously rubs one of the three pips on the card and then does the impossible: he slowly, bit by bit, PEELS OFF the pip from the face of the signed card! Stranger still, with a snap of his fingers he changes the two diamond indexes on the signed card from Threes to TWOS, and then hands out the card (still signed on the back) as a souvenir. I would rate this effect at 5 out of 5. It was extremely magical. I did not expect Jay to peel off that pip. This will blow away lay people. |

Sounds good...
Is it a new effect by Mr. Sankey? 'Cause I've been unable to find it anywhere...

He is selling it at his lecture only at this point. But it was fully produced, is fully packaged like all of his DVDs. He said he would be posting it to his website shortly, which I took to mean in the next few days. Maybe you will have to wait for him to finish his tour this week before he posts it.
I really enjoyed the creativity of the effect. Also, the description was transcribed from the back of the DVD case of the version I purchased. |

I went to his lecture last night in S.F. and saw this. It looked pretty good but it wasn't my cup of tea.

It sounds great from a magi perspective, but I wonder to what extent this effect is more amazing than a simple color change. It's technically more visual, but might not be as magical. Peeling a pip seems to warrant the assumption that it's just a gimmick (from the spectator perspective).

T.J. I see your point but I think it is more magical than a simple color change because not only does the pip come off, but the numbers in the corner of the card change as well. If the numbers didn't change, then you are right, it wouldn't seem like such a big deal. But the spectator sees a three of diamonds, signs the back of the card, and then the middle pip peals off in their hand. Definitely more magical than any color change.

Good morning.
I was at Jay's lecture last night in NYC. I am so glad I was able to go to this. Jay is very educational and entertaining. I purchased Reconstruction and watched the DVD last night. As with all of his DVD's he goes over many differant handlings and ideas on presentation. One of the other effects he presented last night was Vanishink. when I saw the demo for this on-line it just didn't hit me as anything special. In person it is crazy good. Maybe it was just because it's method was nothing like I expected. Not even close. Unfortunetly it sold out before I got to the table but it definetly something I will be picking up. John Kardel

I was at Sankey's lecture last night also. First, Sankey is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He glady took pictures and signed autographs with anyone who requested one. I learned so much about the importance of "real magic" and simplicity and his knowledge of close-up magic is unbelievable. I have a new respect for some of Sankey's effects that I thought were just too simple but are really as magical as they can get for a lay audience.
As for Reconstruction, I was very impressed with the whole routine. There's a good feeling when you switch a card in yet still be several steps ahead of your audience. When the pip started coming off, I was completely blown away how good it looked. You also end totally clean. I only had $20 to spend last night and I ended up getting the Holy Moly/Holy Stretch combo for $20 but once Reconstruction is released I will surely get it for my strolling set.
Unleashing the moment of astonishment, one impromptu situation at a time.

I was also at the lecture. Jay is a great guy. He came around the room before the lecture and thanked people for attending, it was a nice touch. He has a great sense of humor and he has a lot of good magic and magic theory to share. I'm so glad I was there.
The other part of Reconstruction that is cool (which I picked up as one of my 3/dvd's for $50, great bargain!) is that after the pip comes off, the index also changes to the correct value, from a three to a two. It is a clever effect with some nice advantages that have been stated before, such as being several steps ahead of the spectator and ending clean. |

Another NYC lecture attendee here. Two of the biggest hits in the room were Vanishink and Reconstruction. I already had Vanishink, but I picked up Reconstruction.
I had dinner tonight with a group of 8 friends and family members, and tried Reconstruction out on them. Really nice response, they were truly interested and inquisitive when I began to peel the pip off the card. The change of the indexes from 3's into 2's was icing on the cake. As a side note, you're not restricted to using the 3 and 2 of diamonds. The DVD comes with gimmicks for any suit, and enough to perform the effect 100 times. I believe I overheard Jay saying that refills would be available. Definitely a cool release. Please do see Jay's lecture if you're able. It was great, and Jay was really nice, taking photos and signing autographs for all who asked. Kevin

Maaaaan I'm jealous of you guys! I wish he was coming to O-Town
Ahh well, saw his lecture years ago when I was a member of the local magi club. Good memories of that lecture for sure! Sounds like you folks enjoyed yourselves... |

I was also in attendance on Saturday night. Very enjoyable lecture. Having had mixed reactions to his DVD's (sorry but I sometimes find him more annoying than funny), the lecture was a pleasant surprise. Reconstruction looks interesting I can't wait to see the reaction I get with it. It comes with enough supplies for ~80 tries, and can be used to do 7 to 6, 5 to 4, 3 to 2, or 9 to 8. Definitely more startling than a color change.

Funny, I never had the negative reaction to Jay that some of you had to his videos. But I think it is because I saw him at a lecture 12 years ago in Ft Collins Colorado first, before I ever bought anything from him. He has always been this nice. I think it is he pig farming background. Farming pigs must keep you humble. Back then he was packing a lot more tricks into his lecture and the level of knuckle busting was much higher (mexican jumping coins, collect me not, and leaving home, just to name a few) and he packed a ton of magic into a very short period of time.
This past lecture had fewer tricks that were technically simpler, but just as magical, and there was a lot more discussion on philosophy, but I really liked it. And I think Reconstruction will be considered a new Sankey Classic. |

Jay sent out a newsletter ( this is worth signing up for at http://www.sankeymagic.com ) and said this:
RECONSTRUCTION! Scheduled for world-wide release on New Year's Day, RECONSTRUCTION is destined to be one of the most popular effects I've ever released. Lay people go crazy for it, it's sold-out at every magic lecture, and it's my favorite type of effect: dead easy and SUPER magical! It also involves a signed card AND you end clean. So hey, you know it doesn't get much better. In fact, here's an OPEN CALL TO ALL MAGICIANS who bought the effect at one of my recent lectures. Please send me a few sentences and let me know about some of your experiences performing RECONSTRUCTION!!! You can email me at jay@sankeymagic.com Thanks!
