Although I don't own this, YET, a friend does, and he was showing me the TA pen. It was pretty much what I had expected, which is FAR from a bad thing, however, I thought it would have been nice for it to have come with a duplicate normal pen.
Not that you would usually need to switch it, as there is no heat on the pen, it would have just been nice, IMHO.

If there is any heat on the pen during your performance, you've already been caught and there's nothing that a switch can help you with.

Also, as I am sure many have experienced, spectators will often try to replicate what you do, just to re grasp reality. For example, you rub a card on the table and it changes to a different card. The spec will often rub the card themselves to see if it will happen again. Given the action of the pen being used as a similar magical catalyst, I imagine specs may want to rub a pen along the bill themselves just to see what happens. It would be nice to just leave the pen on the table as the effect sinks in, and if a spec happens to pic up the pen to try it themselves, then great. Even in this situation, NO heat is on the pen. It was just the object used as the catalyst, as the table was the object the card was rubbed on in the example, or if you rubbed it on your sleeve. The spec would not suspect anything wrong with your sleeve,, but they would still rub the card on your sleeve, or their own, to see what happens.

I understand your point now, that they might want to try what you tried. Just to clarify my point, however, (which is no longer important but I just want you to understand it) was that if they suspect anything about the pen, the a switch won't do you any good because it means they caught you. I mean it's just a PEN to them. Why would they want to examine a pen if they didn't catch the gimmick? That's what I meant. I think you have a point though. Maybe you can cut off the metal strip on the spare parts pen and it'll take away the evidence that it's a weird pen and you can use that one. They won't be able to use it as the TA Pen.

As Patrick mentioned, it's just a pen, there should be no heat on it. If there is, you've definitely expressed tells to your audience and thus, you should work out the kinks in the routine you're trying to perform.

I agree with you to a point, that is, in theory, because, "it's just a deck of cards" but even with a normal deck, we've all had spectator's want to examine our decks.
For most of the effects with the pen on the DVD, there wouldn't be a chance of heat, really, only the one with the open rubbing of the pen on the bill. So, for all the others, what you say is 100% true, and, in a perfect world with perfect spectators (your technique can be flawless without tells, but the specs can still be suspicious) it would be true for almost all effects. However, the flaw in my own comparison, with a deck, is that the deck is the object that the magic is happening with, with most of the TA pen effects, the pen has nothing to do with the magic, save for that last one I mentioned. Of course, the other effects with the pen, IMHO, are perhaps the best ideas/applications of the pen.

To put things into perspective, and this is going against what I have said as well, think of this in the same category as Pen Through Bill. I perform this when I have walk around gigs, and it always gets amazing reactions. After the effect, I hand the bill back and they ALWAYS want to examine it. NEVER EVER do they want to or even THINK about wanting to examine the pen. They seem to forget it even took part in the effect, yet it was one of the only two objects used, and both objects are equally as important in the effect. Just this thought and experience has made me rethink about using One Bill Wonders (since it's the most practical of the three visual changes presentations), but I don't know which presentation I'll use yet though. I have a feeling there'll be more heat on their bill and the ink than on the pen.

The TA pen is a REAL pen. You can have it in play before the effect. No one will ever suspect the pen.

Two things. First, about the TA Pen- remember you can USE the spare as a secondary. It just doesn't have the "secret flap" on it. These "things" exist already- Paul just figured out a great magical method with them. AND modified them slightly. I actually have a handful of the likeness. If you want more info, PM me. I am trying real hard not to say too much. Anyway, second- I have used the Angel Cake idea a few times. It is really good. In all honesty, I had it figured out before I watched the disc. I already knew Angel Case, and there is a certain review out there in cyberspace that actually goes through the effects in detail. Not revealing anything, but I can see now why Jason and the TA Ads didn't go into a lot of detail as to the effects. Too many of these "updates" can be worked out if you know about the originals. Anyway, we were actually discussing (what Paul now refers to as "Devil Cake"), and working through a couple different devious outcomes. My friend joked about quitting his job and going on an Angel Cake World Tour, to take advantage of the general public. . . . . . and their wallets!

Twilight Angels is now available in a full deck, each card different, red backs. I know Hocus-Pocus is carrying them. They're Mandolin backs, but who cares. I'm using the full deck along with a double backer and I'm good to go without any reset all night.

Didn't Sankey have an effect where you make someone "forget" something they've been shown? It's a great idea for an effect!

Jay Sankey's effect is called Thought Thief. I think it is the basis for Short Term Memory.
