TV magician Ali Bongo dies at 79
Magician Ali Bongo, who made numerous appearances on television, has died aged 79 after suffering a stroke. Bongo - whose real name was William Wallace - also acted as a consultant on programmes including The Paul Daniels Magic Show and Jonathan Creek. The BBC drama's creator David Renwick once said that Bongo's work had inspired its lead character. He became president of The Magic Circle in September and had been giving a lecture in Paris when he fell ill. Bongo's other screen appearances included 1970s children's shows Pauline's Quirkes and The Tomorrow People. 'Great entertainment' He also fronted Ali Bongo's Cartoon Carnival, which ran for nine episodes on the BBC in 1971. His ability to devise and demonstrate tricks led to work with TV magicians including as assistant to David Nixon, and later with Paul Daniels as his chief consultant. Bongo also worked with actors, teaching them how to replicate illusions on film, including the BBC's 1999 production of Oliver. Bongo, who was born in India, also produced a number of books in which he illustrated how to perform magic tricks. The magician said he was against exposing tricks on television, saying it ruined the fun for budding young illusionists. "It's rather silly. That spoils it for a great many kids. If their tricks are exposed on TV, they can't show them to their friends. "Magic is a great entertainment if done professionally and with style," he added. Copied from the BBC News. Tony Curtis

Ali Bongo was a performer/lecturer at the first magic convention I ever attended - I believe it was in 1976 in San Diego. I still remember a cascading ribbon from top hat effect he showed during his lecture.

I spent a delightful afternoon with Ali and Simon Drake here in Santa Monica. They were in LA pitching a TV idea, we got together to compare notes on building magic theaters.
At the time I was building my theater at Magicopolis, Ali had just designed the Magic Circle theater which was going through the building approval process, and Drake had just completed building his London theater. The conversation was sparkling and Ali had many amusing anecdotes we could all relate to regarding building and safety codes, trap doors, moving panels, lifts for handicapped magicians, general and subcontractors, blueprints, architects, change orders, etc. Funny man, brilliant innovator, charming performer... |

I saw the news on the front page of the Telegraph here, which goes to show the legacy Ali left behind and the understated impact he had on the British psyche. He lectured at Leicester a few years back and my impressions were of a man who loved magic, and was so keen to share this with all of us that he over-ran and missed his train!
He rushed off to try and catch it and didn't get the chance to sell his lecture notes. At the next meeting our secretary said Ali was so put out at this missed opportunity he had sent the notes over on a disc with instructions to duplicate it free of charge for anyone who had missed out. The whole thing had been an exercise in sharing his brilliant ideas. I felt quite inspired, and I am very glad to have had the opportunity to meet him, albeit briefly. Phill

Ali Bongo lived a good life. Let's not mourn his death instead, let's remember his magic and friendship. May he have eternal rest.

I have some great old lecture notes from Bongo where each effect is completely described with one hand drawn, by Ali, picture, no text, and it understandably covers about 15 tricks.
