Hi Jack! Tis really an honour to have such an experienced card worker available for some one on one. Cheers mate!
Just thought I'd chuck up some quick questions: 1. Have you ever been to Australia? 2. Have you ever lectured here (if so, when)? 3. Would you plan to in he future, or is it just too freaking far away.... Thanks for your time. Chappo

Cheers Mate!
1. Not yet! 2. See above. 3. I'd love to, of course. In fact, I've always wanted to be Austrailian. But you know, you've got that Andrew Wimhurst fellow- hard guy to follow. Maybe someday I can take a vacation and really visit- and stop in on a few of you guys one fine day! Ps, Love your message tag! Can I steal that? |

Hey Jack,
You can stay at my place. We have soap and towels that say "Holiday Inn" and everything. Chappo's line is one of my favourites, too. It's an Emo Philips line. Andrew

Andrew!
Thanks for checking in! Since you're here I should let people know that I do a strip out control on the new DVD that you had already published years ago in the "Down Under Deals", and that is not properly credited on my DVD. My bad. I did come up with it years ago, but Andrew did too, and he published it first, so I'm setting it straight here, in public, all naked and stuff. I feel much better now. So, I can stay at your place? OK. I'll be right over. -Jack |

Bring beer. We are almost out.
And no problems on the shift thing. I watched the video and wasn't fussed about it at all. It's just card magic, baby, and these things happen. Everyone should get Jack's new video - some GREAT material on there. I especially liked the outtake! Jack's sense of humour is dryer than a Pommie's bath towel.

I smoked too many Cohibas and Sheeshas when I was living overseas, so I've given them up so I might live past 50. The Minister of the Interior says she will let you smoke out the back on her porch, however.

Jokes aside, promise not to maim Mr. Carpenter should he make the long southward trip. Purrty please? And Mr. Carpenter. There is no better time to be an Australian. Every freaking Aussie is receiving economic stimulus hand outs ~$900 AUD. Just make sure you enter the country as: 1. A pregnant woman, who is 2. A single mother, who is 3. Currently studying a full time degree, to become 4. A fully qualified doctor/teacher/civil servant. That should qualify you for at least $1600 AUD straight up. My home... er... front yard... um.... footpath... is always open for such an esteemed individual as yourself. We can chuck up some razor wire for you too in case Mr. Wimhurst discovers your whereabouts. And as for my tag, steal it with my blessings. I've used it as my forum tag ever since I got an internet connection. It's just so wonderfully true. Spread the word boss!

Chappo - you can't give someone permission to use a line that isn't your own.
But I agree, it's a funny line.

ASW- Did I ever say it was?
I've seen this line credited and uncredited in stacks of comedy line compilations, and thought it funny enough to quote. I have received a C&D from it's originator as of yet, so I continue to use it. That being said, here's my new disclaimer: Everybody take heed! Utilize this quote at your own risk .

Cheers for the input Andy.
Forgot to ask Mr. Carpenter: 4 (and final question): What are your favourite pieces of Card Magic reference/literature?

"I like you. You funny man. I kill you last".
-Arnold Swartzensomething, (Commando) That's it I'm coming to Australia. I here that when you go through customs there, when they ask "Do you have a criminal record?", it's best to say, "yes" to avoid any complications. Andrew- I'm made it past 50- you're not missing much. Thanks for the plug on the DVD. Much appreciated. I should say to everyone out there that they're crazy if they don't get a hold of yours as well. And that "Ace cull and production" thing you put on You Tube, you should post the link to that! Folks, this thing fooled the hell out of me, and Andrew, thanks for teaching me that. Maybe the folks here in the forum will encourage you to finally publish that thing! Absolutely fabulous. Chappo! That's a tough question to properly answer, because "favorite" books are dependent on what developmental phase you're in, from youth to present, so I will answer in that context. When I list the books that were influential to me, it's because they're the books I stumbled on as a kid, and is not to say that others wouldn't have been important to me if I had come across them- it's just the way it worked out. So, for me, when I was a kid starting out- it was all the Bruce Elliot magic books, John Scarne's "Scarne on Cards", Gibson, Henry Hay. Then I discovered Harry Lorayne's "Close Up Card Magic". This really opened the door. Followed quickly by the Garcia material and many others available at that time. Then I found "The Expert at the Card Table" somewhere in there. Scarne and Erdnase, by then, had sealed my fate. I would specialize in gambling moves, and still pretty much do! Next big impact of course, was all the Paul Harris and Derek Dingle material- just like everyone else. . . changed our perspective. Then I was like a kid in a candy store when I got of hold of Darwin Ortiz's lecture notes. Started paying attention to Marlo at that point! I would say my favorite book of all time though, if I had to pick one, is "Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table". It came along at the time when I was trying to put all my gambling stuff into some kind of coherent show, a professional presentation of the "crooked gambler". I was really missing the mark- and that book straightened me out. The material was top notch, still is- and I learned so much. Finally, I can't leave out Martin Nash. The Nash trilogy was very influential- second only to Ortiz, as far as leading me to the place I wanted to be, both in a presentational aspect as well as type of material. |

Some great words of wisdom there Mr. Carpenter. Really like the concept of 'whatever developmental sage your in'. Cheers for everything!

Thanks Chappo, I'd like to know what kind of stuff you do- should I just ask Andrew?
I'll take a guess (and it really is a guess, I have not spoken with Andrew). I'm thinking Comedy Card Magic- lots of jokes and flourishes. Am I way off? -Jack |

You may ask Andrew, though he won't know either . You see we've never met. As for the 'card side' of my work, I do appreciate your amicable guess. Depends what you define as 'comedy card magic'. I don't force comedy into my work, I just perform according to my personality. I'm no stand up guru, and neither am I an improvisational genius. But comedy in my routines is definitely essential. Mainly table hopping and small group walk around. Nothing huge
As for flourishes... I wish. People like Dan and Dave Buck would recoil in horror to see what I can achieve with my hands after so many years of practice. But I think I might (well...maaaaaaaaaaaybe) be able to hold my own with them after another century (or 3) of practice. Thanks so much for all your work over this week Jack. What you have given all of us is truly invaluable, especially the young 'uns like me. Regards Chappo

As a fellow Aussie I'd like to say that there is way too much information in this thread about Australia. As a small, island nation somewhere in the southern Pacific Ocean we are, and should remain, mysterious. Yes, kangaroos jump, frolic and forage in the main streets of Sydney. Yes, we only eat barbecued prawns. Yes, we only drink beer. Yes, all our women look like Elle Macpherson and sing like Kylie Minogue. And yes, all our men look like, speak like and act like Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter (RIP). Just wanted to clarify a few facts...
P.S. Andrew Wimhurst is very, very, very, very good. P.P.S. Yes, all our cardmen are of the level of Andrew Wimhurst. |

Wow, I'd like to visit Australia--if it wasn't just too freakin' far away.
Seems like I heard a rumor a few years back that Chuck Fayne had moved down there. And while I can't compete with Andrew with the 'boards, if all the men look like Irwin, I'd DEFINITELY be the most handsome man in the country! Here in the USA, I'm only the 11th most handsome!
