Hi Paul,
Here is another question for you as being a pro you can give great advise on this..... Mental and Psychic effects are usually quite process driven. Info written down, and collected ,sealed, mixed etc. What if any tips can you share on how to avoid these heavy process moments that created dead time. Obviously choosing material that doesn't involve much process is one way but much of this process can lead to great strong moments if handled well. Any thoughts woule be lovely. Thanks, Kranzo

http://www.deceptionsunlimited.com/menu1.html is a wonderful example of a mentalist who loves process. He builds extra process into some effects, because he love to play in the reality of process. One of my favorite effects of Ricks is the Journey. It has a wonderful pay off at the end... but OHHH BOY what a lot of process! Fist he passes out a basket of paper and people can examine every piece and take any piece they want. Then he passes out a cup of pens and people can take any pen that they want. Next envelopes are passes out. Everything examinable and fair. No markings of any kind. Then he asks people to think of locations that they may wish to vacation too. And has them call out their locations and describe them. These are recorded on a white board and he asks them to write them down and seal them in the envelops which are collected and mixed. Next these envelopes are passed out to seven other people at random who come up and stand in a line............. need I mention that we are now less than half way through the effect! Other mentalists like very little process. None if possible. The best example of this today is John Edward http://www.johnedward.net/ Everything is pre show. All the process happens in the weeks before the show when people fill out pages and pages of surveys. Then a staff of people research the audience. Next John films a 3 hour show where he pumps for information and works on people that he has collected surveys from... so he can edit the show down to 22 minutes and put a processes less product on the air. Playing with process lies somewhere in-between. Usually this is done as a way to show that everything is fair, clean and above board. "Test Conditions" as magicians like to say. Process is a wonderful time to play the "Science" of your mental "Experiments" and to really get to know the audience members. I like to have pre show info that I can throw in during process heavy moments so I can keep the momentum of the action. Tell me a little about how you play with process. -Paul Draper |

Greetings Nate & Paul,
I hope that you guys are well... Process is certainly one of my favorite topics to discuss in mentalism--but it is important to differentiate between process of method and process of effect. They are certainly not the same thing, for while the former is burdensome, the latter can help to create some of the strongest mentalism that I have ever seen. (I talk about this extensively in my current lecture, and in one of my upcoming releases.) I would also suggest listening to the wonderful interview that Michael Weber does with Max Maven on the Nothing DVD set--specifically the points that Max makes when he uses the example of a football game. Take care my friends, and enjoy your stay at the Café Paul. Keep the change, Rick PS. John Edward is a mentalist? That's not what they called him on South Park. |
