After more than 25 years off from public performing, I am back in the game.
I just landed a restaurant gig to help supplement my day job. It's only 2 hours a night but it's a start. I am so psyched about it. Wish me luck!

Hey Sly, how many nights a week? Sounds like a pretty good gig to me! I think it would be tough to go much more than two hours at a time anyway.

Just one night so far. I have a few more places that are interested but are uncommitted.
I have noticed that I need to do more sit-ups cause my back is killing me at the end of the night. I am on my feet all day as it is, but now I am slightly bent at the waist for 2 more hours and its taking its toll on my back. I have to find a better posture.

Sly...
I had that problem a year or so ago. The solution, stand up straight and do more material at chest height. Not only do you appear more confident, but it also makes it easier for other tables to become interested in what you're doing, and then they want you to perform for them. It doesn't entirely eliminate you leaning over for the occasional 'in the hands' tricks, but it helps the back out a lot. And get some good quality shoes. They too make all the difference. What restaurant are you at? Whereabouts in VA? Good luck! Steve |

Hey Sly, what kind of material are you working?

I am working at the Village Grill in Ashburn, VA.
The material I am doing is mainly cards, coins, sponge, napkins, etc. I'll try that chest level stuff but I still have to bend for many of the tricks. More lower back exercises at the gym.

Sly,
Not to be an ***, but I do the same type of material. It IS possible to stand up straight when doing that sort of stuff. At 'chest level' might have been the wrong choice on words. But I stand up straight as can be and have practically eliminated leaning over all but a couple times in the act. What night/time are you there? You're about 1.5 hours from me, but I have family over there. Would be the perfect excuse to catch your act. Best. Steve |

Thanks to all for wishing my luck.
Steve, I am there Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30. Wear a disguise if you come in. I am very loose and crazy with the general public but sort of freeze up around magicians.

Second night was last Wednesday. It was busier than the first with repeat customers who came in to see me. I am not good with names but was able to remember theirs which I think made them feel good.
I had a few tables that said they were going to tell all their friends and definitely be back the following Wed. So far it's looking good!

When lowering down sly, keep your back straight, bend from the knees, it feels strange at 1st but you wont ache at the end of your shift,
when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth

I had a back injury and no excersize would help and had to give up on hospitality suite gigs.
If you do have problems, perhaps changing the act contents to 'back friendly' stance would help.

I have been standing up straighter and it's been helping. I'll try the knee bend thing too.

Sly, I am proud of you. That is great you landed the gig. I have been super excited this week since I landed my gigs. I start Monday. Keep letting us know how it is going and be sure to tell any good stories that happen with your audiences.

Yes, it's a portion of the poster. I do my own graphics cause I can keep tweaking it. If anyone is interested I can help with theirs.
