Hi John, I know you're mainly a card guy,and most of the post here are about your wonderful card magic. But, you've also came up with some well thought out coin routines. One of my favorites is your "Shanghai Surprise." The idea of substituting a C/S coin for other coins is under explored. I have a few routines based on this principal. So I owe you a Thank You for that. But was wondering if you have any other work on this? or any other coin routines in print or ones you plan to release?
Thanks, Joe

I assume John's aware of it, but any fans of Shanghai Surprise should be sure to check out Syd Segal's version of it in Doug Brewer's "Coin Box Killers" That routine got me rediscovering John's routine all over again, and it was a joy.
I suspect I'm one of the few who have tried John's excellent coins to sealed envelope routine from "Impossibilia". That's a shame. The I/O holdout is also underappreciated, IMHO.

I loved both the Shanghai Suprise and his One is the Onliest. The routines both coin and card from the Impossibilia book and Video are real gems which I've performed ever since watching and reading them.

Guys,
Been along time gone since I played with the coins. Short-sighted of me, I suppose, but when I started practicing law, something had to give (or go). That said, I always liked Shanghai Surprise. As I said elsewhere, its a coin trick structured like a card trick--sort of. I was also surprised that it never caught on. Until I met Doug Brewer at MAGIC Live this year who told me he had work on it. I was not familiar with Sid Segal's version--I'll have to look it up. Onliest is another strange construction--how do you follow a jumbo coin production kicker? With an organic nest of boxes, of course. The I/O holdout worked great. Honestly, over the years, this was the coin trick I kept returning to--how can you do the organic nest of boxes without using the hold out? No luck yet. John
"And although this art is so wonderful, still it is held in no honor . . . The reasons are various, it seems to me; first, the art is concerned with useless matters; second, it is practiced by men of low degree."

I've performed both of these at gigs and love 'em both.
I have not performed one is the onliest in a long time but have borrowed one idea from it for my "one ball routine" with billiard balls.
