I'm just curious as to how many clubs out there that have mixed memberships. How many are comprised of folk who are in the IBM, SAM both or neither. Is it mandatory that everyone in your ring be a member of the IBM? Does anyone check to make sure everyone is a member in good standing? If they aren't does anybody really care?
I think my ring only has about half the people being members of the IBM. Is this typical or are most clubs pretty hardcore about requiring everyone being a paid in full IBM member? |

Well my local club, the Louisville Magic Club is very mixed. Aside from it being the Okito/Lance Burton ring and the Mac King Assembly, it also functions as an independent club. So though a lot of the members are in the IBM and/or SAM, a good number of the members aren't in neither. The only time the club is strict on membership is if someone wants to be an officer, which in that case they would have to be a member of both the IBM and the SAM.

There are three clubs in Houston.
There is IBM Ring 39, which has been around since the 1940's. There is SAM Assembly 19, which has been around since the 1920's. It started elsewhere and moved here. Both of these require that after attending three meetings, the prospective member must submit an application to join. The third is the Houston Association of Magicians, which is made up of active members of either of the above clubs. Most of us are members of all three clubs.
