My wonderful wife gave me a copy of Card College for my birthday, and I'm now trying to learn the spread cull. While I've managed to achieve something approximating it, I'm having difficulty doing it smoothly; the card appears to get pulled out of its place during the culling process. Would anyone have any tips, or even better, some video of what a spread cull is supposed to look like? Google returns surprisingly few results when I try search for it.

I believe oz pearlman teaches it on born to perform card magic
"The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion. That's what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they'll go through the pain no matter what" A.

Definitely the Roadrunner Cull DVD. Kostya Kimlat teaches the basic handling, explaining the rhythm, speed, and timing. He then teaches culling four cards, and then culling half the pack. Lots of very good applications. Highly recommended.

I can recommend the Cullfather DVD above. Really an excellent resource. Even the routines are first rate. Best,

I've been playing around with The Strip from Buckley's Card Control. (First sleight in the book) This is a really simple cull and seems ok so far...I have to give it some more mileage to really judge. Although it's not like a regular spread cull, I find it much easier to pull off...so far.

The resource that you are using (C.C. Vol 1) is the same that I used to FINALLY learn the spread cull. My advice is to reread the explanation/text slowly and fully understand the methodology first.
Mr. Giobbi really tips his mitt on this so take your time and read carefully with cards in hand...its suppose to look like you are spreading the deck to view the cards as you converse with the specs... Good luck and don't give up...you'll eventually get there! BTW you have a wonderful wife! Cardamagically, DOM
We don't stop playing when we grow old...we grow old when we stop playing.

I believe Kostya spent a year on learning the cull alone, and finding different handlings, uses, touches, on this one beautiful and deceptive sleight

Jhudsy,
You can prevent the card(s) from sliding out by applying a little bit of pressure with your right thumb on top. This prevents it/them from separating from the other cards, and helps to keep it/them flush as the others slide above it/them. A little slop is OK and provides a little more cover. Try tilting your hands forward a little, this will provide even more cover. |
