OH YES... I have an amazing Elmsley story. Never made public, until now.
Alex flew into the San Francisco area to visit our mutual friend Persi Diaconis (probably the two most knowledgable card guys ever) I was asked to pick him up at the airport. I don't think Persi had a car then, as he was a New Yorker. So I got to be the FLY ON THE WALL for most of their sessions. And yes, that lecture FRIED EVERYONE. When at the finish he re-revealed ALL THE CARDS THAT HAD BEEN SLECTED all throughout the evening... NOBODY, NOBODY HAD A CLUE. But that's not the story. Alex was writing his "book" (it ended up two huge volumes, right?) and when he was getting ready to fly back to England he asked a favor of me. His notes and manuscript, all written in his very beautiful long-hand, was HUGE, and he didn't want to carry them home, so he asked me to pack them up and MAIL them to his home. WOW... this was priceless stuff, and I got worried it could GET LOST in the mail. So I took the whole stack and Xerox Copied them. I didn't LOOK at any pages, then wrapped and sealed the material and mailed his originals, as requested. They got there, no problem. I NEVER opened and looked at the material. Then, when Vol. 1 of his book came out and word was there would be a Vol. 2, I called Steven Minch to chat and it turned out that some of Alex's notes, etc., were either lost or misplaced. So, I told Minch what I had and mailed it all to him to help with material for Vol. 2.

That was really kind of you to do all that,Pete.
The two volumes of collected works are incredible,I always do a few Elmsley tricks when I'm out in a bar with friends. Collinspell, Hoftwister,1002nd Aces etc. Really appreciate that reply,Pete. Would have loved to have been at that 1975 lecture,I hear all the big names were there. You were a very good friend to do all that xeroxing and looking after those notes. |
