Hey Pete, when working in San Francisco, did you get to know Harry Anderson during the time he was starting out,...on the streets? While we're at it, what "great" street-acts have you seen come and go in San Francisco?
thanks, gallagher |

Harry and I worked at the Magic Cellar together, but I never really got to be really close to him. And surprisingly, I never saw him work on the streets. Matter of fact I seldom ever saw anyone busking. There was one act I thought was creative. Some guy had a huge cardboard box (probably from a refrigerator). He was inside and there was a COIN SLOT on it. The sign said, "Put in coin to see show." When you did a flap opened on the top half and he would perfom. I don't recall what he did, or never got his name.

I remember the box guy and sadly he is no longer with us according to Jerry Salazaar. Any stories Pete from the Cellar?

That was the human jukebox. I understand he played requests - on his trumpet. Also, there is a story (don't know if it was true) that the human jukebox was a source of recreational substances, if the right amount of cash was deposited in the secret slot. From what I was told by one of them, I don't think the busking magicians of that era appreciated the competition [trumpet playing or otherwise] at all!
