We were posting about this subject 7 years ago, I thought I would bring it up again. My Sunday School kids have seen before Gospel illustrations about "Holy Transformation" (the book title by Chip Ingram) which talks about "morphing" into a changed life. I have done already the caterpillar to butterfly silks- the best way probably to illustrate this message.
Anyway, I saw that Lynetta Welch is lecturing at Denny and Lee's Magic Shop- Lynetta makes the famous Malini Egg Bags. Denny himself has lectured on the egg bag himself many times (I was at one of those lectures in Las Vegas) and you can get his great routine on DVD directly from him. Martin Lewis has his own DVD on the egg bag (which features his mother who makes the Mardo Egg Bags) and you can also review his routines on youtube. The Mardo bag is the one I use, I got a nice new blue one from Penguin Magic. The Mardo Egg Bag is slightly larger than the Tarbell bag- I like it because the hidden pocket is on the outside of the bag at the beginning of the routine and you can find it easily as it is located directly under a seam connection that you can feel with your fingers. I thought I'd revisit with the Lighthouse kids this Sunday the topic of "transformation". I will have three kids come up- one will read off large poster cards 2 Corinthians 5:17, another will read Romans 12:2. I will have those two kids sit down (we usually read verses off of cards each week before I do an illustration based on the verses just read by the kids) and then do a simple routine with the Mardo Egg Bag illustrating/reinforcing what it means to be "transformed". I will be using a yellow practice foam golf ball (available at large sporting goods stores- really neat to use in magic tricks- looks like a real golf ball but you can squeeze it) going to "transform", then disappears (the process of morphing by just trying hard to be holy usually doesn't work- see chapter 11 of Chip Ingram's book above- and see Ephesians Chapter 4 for description of the "morphing process"). I will then end the routine by stealing a large Goshman jumbo sponge production rabbit from my pocket to the egg/golf ball bag (see the Martin Lewis routine), because since this is a magic trick you would expect a bunny at the end! (or you can use any items/different colored eggs that you'd like). Another sidebar- you can download very inexpensively off the www.LaflinMagicStore.com website "Beautiful Gospel Magic" by Duane Laflin written in 1989. On page 10 is Duane's routine with an egg bag which fits nicely into the "Easter egg"/Easter theme coming up in April. |

Just a general comment on egg bags- there are so many wonderful ones out there. The Mardo bag or an inexpensive net bag is just fine for kids for sure and easy to use. The Mardo bag is in stock at Penguin in three colors: all plaid- either in red, blue or black. The black Malini bag (sold by Denny and Lee's and others) and the Hobson bags are especially good for adult audiences as they are deceptively small- makes it even more effective. Denny's production of a small full shot glass that he drinks from at the end of his routine is really amazing- my guess is Denny may have that on his own DVD or his own lecture notes for sale if you call him. I do know Denny also has the Charlie Miller notes for sale, etc..
There are just so many great entertaining things a magician can do with an egg bag, Jeff Hobson's comedy routine is second to none. |

On www.youtube.com "Jay Marshall and the Egg Bag" (put it in the youtube search box) Jay appears to be using a black Malini bag. There are many other egg bag routines on youtube posted including a "Jeff Hobson Egg Bag Performance". Just great stuff... Yowsa!- gotta be some other good "Easter egg"/Gospel applications out there for the kiddos- Sunday April 16, 2017 (Resurrection Sunday)is not that far away.

I think I've posted about this in times past. I don't have a specific "gospel" routine for an egg bag. I do like to have a variety of final loads and as was mentioned above, I too have used a plastic Easter egg that can be take apart. Inside will be the "missing" signed bill, some other object that has to do with that day's theme. The closest thing I did for a "gospel" routine was to use the Easter egg and talk about: "...people think Easter is all about finding eggs. Let's see if you can figure out how I hide this egg -- let's see if YOU can find it!" I proceed with a standard routine. At the end I open the egg to find a picture of Jesus silk and make the definitive statement that: "...its fun to look for eggs at Easter time -- but, Easter is all about Jesus coming back to life!"

Jim - An Easter effect I've put together uses the Die as Christ and the Die Box as the Tomb-the Hat as the World - using the sucker effect- Romans say he was stolen - but He appeard back - I explained the whole effect in one of my postings - if you want to search for it-L-O-L ('search'- 'russo' user name-) someday I'll have to go to search and list all the dates according to 'just comments' and "effects" wanting to share -- Blessing -- Ralph(ruso)Rousseau

I created a message for the egg bag years ago but then only performed it a few times. The message is, "I once was lost, but now I'm found" It was my testimony, but shorter and written to fit the basic egg bag routine.
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.
