I am not new to magic, but what I have been asked to do is very new to me. I think it is an exciting idea. I co-host an live Internet medical call in show. The "station" owner is expanding the on-line hours and asked me if I wanted my own show about magic. It would be an hour (less commercials) discussing/performing/teaching magic. While aimed at beginners of all ages, it would have segments for all levels of performers.
I would like to highlight performers of all levels with video clips of their performances. I would also like to have permission from as many producers of magic effects to teach a trick or effect from a current or past DVD/book in return for promoting that DVD/book, or a newer one, to the public. I know this is risky, but I am asking for feedback (on or off line)

Ray,
I sent you a PM. Beginners would love this but the price to the producers and advertisers could be devastating. Real magicians are likely to see this as "The Masked Magician Part II". They get free publicity! Publicity is more credible than paid advertising. A smart advertiser is going to avoid sponsoring it. Commercial TV runs on advertising revenues. You are doing this specifically for a commercial TV station for the money. You should also notice that many of the real pros spend their time getting their videos OFF of youtube rather than putting them on there. That may leave you with amateurs ONLY for demonstrations. (Pros are paid for performing!) Amateur Hour has its place. That is going to be the limitation here. Keeping it honest will be a real challenge. You might consider only showing videos you personally produced. Why not limit it to your specialty of hypnosis? Exposing your act has some merit over exposing someone else's act. I commend you on having the integrity to ask magicians first. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

That's an interesting idea, but I agree with Bob Sanders. Amateurs like myself may enjoy it, but you may cast a negative light on yourself in the eyes of the professionals. Just my humble opinion...

For 20 years I have made part or all of my income (including putting 5 kids through college) performing mentalism and hypnosis throughout the country, including Las Vegas. I have worked with and known many of the top professional magicians in the US today and they are way too busy to care one whit about my little endeavor. I failed to make my intentions clear. This would not be about "exposure", but about education. The focus would discussions of the basics of magic tricks and presentation. Each week a basic trick (no proprietary ones) would be taught. Hopefully some developers of magic would see and appreciate what I am trying to present and allow me to show some part of what they have to sell.
I tend to stay away from the discussion forums because there seems to be so many people who spend all their time blasting anyone who posts anything positive about what they are doing. How do those people have time to practice and perform is beyond me. Thanks guys, for your input. It is appreciated.

This sounds very interesting to me. I'm in a remote area where I have zero access to magic performances or lessons, except YouTube and DVDs. (I finally got to see a live magician perform last weekend at our County Fair!) Then again, it also depends on hours, connection requirements, etc.
