Hi, I am working on the serpentine rope and mic stand penetration. I am using a kirkendal reel. I have heard that this reel is one of the best but doing the mic stand penetration this reel has no power. I am pretty disappointed with it. can someone recommend a better reel to do these effects.

The reel is probably ok, but ROPE has more drag then silk. Why not get a Rice Serpent Silk?

Pete, thank you for your response. I could use a serpent silk...i was watching paul diamonds reel video and it looks great with a rope so I thought I would give it a try but my reel doesn't seem to be able to handle it.

Well you are using the wrong thing for that effect. As Pete mentioned, you use a silk for the penetration of a Mic Stand or pole.
The rope is best used for untying knot and self tying knot effects. See Paul Diamond video #1 for the best instructions in the world for using Reels. Please do your homework before making false statements of a product. The Kirkendall Reels are the one of the best made for the magic community. Due to your lack of knowledge and experience with such equipment, you find it disappointing. You purchased the equipment, but now you need the instruction on proper handling and methods of use. Equipment like this takes weeks of work, it is not an open package and perform type of item. If you want the Paul Diamond video, PM me, I will sell it to you for $30. |

Wmhegbli, who are you to tell me to do my homework. you have no idea what research I have done. I don't need you to tell me I have a lack knowledge. I know I have a lack of knowledge when it comes to reels that is why I am asking the question here. isn't that the purpose of these forums? if I am using the wrong reel or trying to do an effect that it wasnt intended for then that fine. I have no problem with someone telling me that, but it can be said in a tactful manner. I am not your son or daughter to be lecturing. Pete pointed me in the direction I needed to go without belittling me or trying to make me look like an idiot.
what false statement did I make? I said it doesn't have the power I am looking for and it doesn't. I have heard that the reel I have is one of the best and maybe it is...none the less I am disappointed in it. that's my choice to feel that way and you have no say in that. |

It might be because the rope is too heavy and has too much resistance (surface texture of the rope) to let the reel do it's thing.
Instead of regular cotton rope try a different kind of cord that is hollow (light weight) and smooth surface (nylon?) . I'm thinking of the kind of cord you can sometimes find sold as an eyeglass lanyard. It's round, hollow and the surface is "slick" not rough, so it would be less likely to hang up. Or make a "rope" from silk . Perhaps try a 24" or 36" white silk rolled tightly around a thin dowel , the edge sealed off with some fabric adhesive to make a long , hollow tube of silk that will perhaps pass for a "rope" . (I haven't tried this , just thinking of ideas to make a lightweight, smooth surface rope .) |

Look at the time stamp, we were writing at the same time. Tact, what is tact, I never had tact. If there is any professional writers here, they can rewite my post for me anytime. Thanks.
ggarcia, was the one that did not post a complete question to begin with, I simply posted from the information he gave in his post. By the way, you will note on the Paul Diamond video that he did not use the rope for the scarf through pole. Paul likes to use a scarf and he even stitches the one he uses regularly so it stays in the narrow rope fashion. Everyone wants videos, when they do they do not take in the information give, visually. |
