Hi, All:
For the past year I have been doing shows in public school for kids in the kindergarten and the first grade. I have been asked to do a show for third graders and before I say yes or no, I would like to know whether you think that there is a great deal of difference working for first graders versus third graders. I would greatly appreciate your input. -Marty |

Yes and no. Some stuff will work across the board but with 3rd graders you need to be a little more sophisticated. they will challenge you more, also.
With really young kids, they are just understanding stuff and magic itself is just another thing that exists. that's why you would concentrate on tricks with lots of color and sound or movement. As they get older, they understand that something is not supposed to just vanish or appear. Older still, they get jaded and think they know what you did. Good luck! |

If you can perform for 5 and 6 year olds, you can perform for anybody!! The older kids (9 years or so) or actually easier because you don't have to remind them of everything you're doing and their attention spans are longer. You can do "adult" stuff like the growing head spiral or card tricks and they get it. You can expand your show with some really nice effects (I do Picto-Transpo for this age group) and even some edgier effects like smash and stab. I really enjoy performing for this age group.

3 and 4 year olds are a challange every year after that becomes easier. IMHO
I changed two tricks in my kiddie bday party show yesterday to do a college graduation party, and only I knew that it was nearly the same show that I do for the little ones.

It really depends on the tricks and how you present them. What tricks did you do for the first grade and are you planning on adding any new ones?

Thank you all for the food for thought. As I look at the effects that I currently do for the five and six year olds, I can honestly say that I will keep most of them in the mix because they would play for just about any audience. I also see this as an opportunity to try a few things out that I did not put into my current show because I thought that the audience was too young to get the effect.I guess that in the end, I just need to give it a try and discover for myself what works and what doesn't. Thanks again.
