Hi!
At a few show I have done for a while, have I stacked the deck in si stebbins order. And when I have done a trick with it so are there always a spectator how ask if he or she could shuffle. Have you any good answer to that or what should I do? From/ David The Magicman

Let them shuffle.
As you get more confident in your performance (you are in control, not them, etc.) and in your skills (false shuffles, handling the deck in a 'do-not-care' attitude, etc.), they will no longer ask to shuffle. |

Ye, but if I would like to do one more trick with si stebbins, what should I do then?

Keep a second stacked deck on your person and switch after a suitable interlude with coins etc.

Or learn an effect like Simon Aronson's Bait and Switch, taking Julie's suggestion a bit further.
Sometimes, switching out to do a non-card routine is a red flag - all due respect of course Julie - so, something like Bait and Switch for example keeps you in cards, and you get to NAIL the audience TWO more times Cohiba is right that the more confident you get, and the better your audience management skills become, you will rarely run into this situation. YOU are in charge, NOT your audience You might ALSO consider a different METHOD for the same effect. And one more suggestion: have the spectator riffle shuffle. Confine them to ONE. Most spectators shuffle rather horribly, and you will find that a decent part of your stack is still preserved, albeit broken up here and there. In this situation, you will have to "jazz", but, you can ALWAYS bring an effect to a successful conclusion. Oh, one more thought, this is CHEAP but it WORKS After thet shuffle, take back the pack and "accidently" drop it. Do a really good job of it too. As you - and they are picking up the mess, have a cooler ready to ring in. Voila! Ahimsa, Vlad |

That is a nice idea Vlad.
I use a marked deck for just this type of spectator, yes you may shuffle, and please let them do as much as they like. A lot of Mem-deck routines is possible with marked cards. Then when you are more in control as Cohiba says, drop the marked deck since you will not be using it any more. |

Something that helped me immensely is to NOT open with any memdeck effects. Open with some conventional material where the spectator shuffles a lot. After one or two effects do a deck switch and there's no heat on the cards since they have already shuffled them a number of times.

"Can I shuffle?"
"Absolutely! Just as soon as I'm done with this trick!"

Scott that was a good one.
David, if you need some ideas for marked deck routines, just send a PM. One thing I have used a lot is to mark the decks my self, with a marker for transperants (I think that is the english name) they match the red and blue Bicycles great. It is quick to mark if you start from New deck order. Then you will not need to switch the marked deck in or out. |

Barrie Richardson's new DVDs feature one piece, the Human Movie Projector, that offers a nicely ingenious solution to the dilemma of allowing a memorized stack to be shuffled.

I feel that if a spectator asks to shuffle, you really need to let them. It's important that they not think the cards are in some specific order. After that, there are numerous things you can do. First, do some card tricks which can be done with a shuffled deck. Second, put the deck away and do some non-card magic. (If you have a second stacked deck ready, then later, when you get your deck out, you can do more memdeck magic.) Third, learn and use "The Subtle Game." It's a good effect in itself, and it resets your stack.
There is an article on the use of The Subtle Game on my website for free: http://www.loomismagic.com Dennis Loomis

Try this patter
Audience : can I shuffle? you : sure, but because these are very special decks with micro chips in them, they must be shuffled in a very special way. Otherwise they will explode and burn the hands. It goes like this: < you do a fancy flourishy false cut/shuffle while describing how the cards move > <continue with where you left off> what do you guys think of this method? |

I had an English teacher in 5th grade who would know exactly how to answer this question. If she had been doing a card trick and you had asked her, "Can I shuffle?", she'd reply, "I don't know. Have you ever practiced shuffling? Are you any good at it? You'd know better than I whether you can shuffle."
If you actually wanted to shuffle the deck yourself, the proper question should be, "May I shuffle?" |

Learn a convincing and beautiful shuffle, they won't ask to shuffle because
1) you already shuffled the deck 2) they aren't so good at shuffling cards and there's no need to show it to the others Anyway I usually have 2 decks, I start asking someone to shuffle the deck then I do a couple of tricks, then I change the deck... |
