Hi,
I am pretty new to ventriloquism. I have ordered the Maher Course & it should be here any day now. I'm really wanting to get a good pro figure so I thought I would ask the pros here their opinion on the 32" doll called "Bart" from the follwing link: http://www.maherstudios.com/profigures.htm Is this a very good figure to buy? Will it serve me well for many years? Thanks for reading. |

The Maher figures are nice. In general they are well made and are good value for the price. Honestly, I think that they are superior for the entry-level performer and yet are truly a professional piece.
You could do a lot worse for the same money! I could name at least two other makes of figure that are more expensive and that give you no more value (or quality) than you get with the Maher figure. I believe that the 36-inch figure that you are looking at will serve you for many years. It comes standard with the two features that help you create the illusion of life in your figure, mouth and eye movement. I have a 40-inch Maher figure (check out the black and white photo of the Archie to get an idea of mine). It is over 15 years old and looks pristine. It was my third figure. I went over board with the “extras”. I got winker/blinkers, raising eyebrows, and flapping ears. Honestly there is no real need for these features. While you are learning, you could just as easily “get-by” with a much less expensive hand puppet (under $20.00) or one of the modified Vent Dolls that Maher sells. Mayer modifies a commercial vent doll by putting the head on a stick, with thumb lever and neck ball (for good rotation), and builds a hollow body, which they sell as the “standard” for about $100.00. I have a Maher modified “standard’ Danny O’Day doll that you can have for $75.00 plus postage if you want. My first figure was a Juro (toy company) “professional” 30-inch Jerry Mahoney. It is made of heavy latex, has a ball neck on head stick, a thumb ring to move the mouth and a hollow body. There is no eye movement. It is still in great condition and toured in the military with me.

Before you buy a hard figure, take a moment to look at http://www.axtell.com. They have a lot of interesting soft figures.

I second that idea about checking out Axtell soft figures. If you are just beginning they are a lot easier to learn to manipulate. For $150.00 you can have a figure, Kids will (Usually) prefer to a hard figure. Check out the WorldVents site on Yahoo Groups to talk to a bunch of Vents. Our annual Convention in Ft. Mitchell Kentucky takes place next week, so it may be a little sparse on the boards.----------cheers!----Jimeuax
