I'm oddly enough working on the Tenkai palm. I'm pretty energized when I perform so with me constantly moving it's hard not to flash. There are oh so many visual things that you can do with the Tenkai move though.

Hey Guys,
Can you be a bit more specific? Are you in the process of learning them and want to talk strategy? Or do you already do the moves, and are looking for cool applications? Or something completely different? Donny, I haven't done much Tenkai Palm work in a number of years (I used to do a wee lil' bit when I worked behind the bar, but that was many, many years ago), but try to track down Brett Bishop. The guy is a destroyer of mythological proportions. He does all that kind of stuff in the most awe-inspiring of ways, so if there are any bits of advice to give, he's most certainly the giver. I took your advice and looked up Brett Bishop. He had a video on his myspace page called Twist and Shout house and I can only assume he is either doing some sort of devil's voodoo or Tenkai. Very amazing... What are your thoughts on Marlo's Simple shift? Do you feel it is inferior in method to some of the more technical versions? I use it in a few of my effects so I'm curious if you work with it at all. DO |

Hey Donny,
I never really use any multiple shifts (or any move, for that matter) which use a Hindu shuffle type of action. That doesn't make them inferior, but it's just not how I handle cards. Marlo's Simple Shift is clever and convincing, and I would have nothing against performing it if it weren't for the Hindu shuffle action. I don't tend to do a lot of four-Ace tricks or others where I need to use multiple shifts, but for the few that I do perform, my go-to multiple shift is the Elias Multiple Shift (Sadowitz, Bannon, and Fisher have great work on it). But of course, context is everything. Tom, very interesting! It reminds me a lot of change blindness. Do you think this would allow you to do things that change blindness wouldn't? What about using Bich's magical applications of the Frixion pen, but with a low heat source, spreading the change over a length of time? Or maybe somehow integrating those lenses for glasses that slowly change their opacity depending on how much light is around (regular glasses inside, and sunglasses outside)? You could wax your face except for a nice big Fu Manchu, and then have your audience stare at your cleanly-shaven face for days, not realizing that you've now grown the world's sexiest mustache. Or for the most obvious idea, you could just straight-up use a video kinda like the Youtube one for a stage performance. Put up a "still picture" on a big screen, something much simpler than the one in the Youtube video, and invite a spectator on stage, asking her to remember everything about it, and sitting her down in a chair facing the audience with her back to the screen. Ask the rest of the audience to watch the photo the entire time to make sure you don't switch it for another one. You then proceed to wipe the spectator's memory. Upon asking her various questions about the photo, she gets them all wrong, and the audience verifies that she's a dumbass because they're looking at the "same" photo that she saw at the beginning. You could even use a hybrid image for yet another method layer, kinda like Angelo Carbone uses in his Albert Monroe routine. Care to share any of your ideas here, Tom? Tyler Wilson |
