Having spent more than 25 years working in advertising, this effect really
struck a chord with me. The subliminal advertising premise is a great one.

When I was in college, there were two books on subliminal advertising
that were required reading. One was “The Hidden Persuaders” by Vance Packard
and “Subliminal Seduction” by Wilson Bryan Key. The cover of Key’s book
had a photo of a mixed drink with ice cubes and a twist. Above the glass were
the words “Are You Being Sexually Aroused by this Picture?”. These ideas were
pretty much ignored by the Ad Community, but made for interesting discussion.

The popularity and success of Mad Men makes this a real topical effect and
one I’m looking forward to performing.

For those of you interested in doing the routine like me, the above books would
provide some great background material on the subject.

Yes! And as I state in the book, advertising is an international hook. We are ALL subject to adverting each day (30,000+ messages). So, whether you have an affinity for advertising, or you just bring up the topic of the participant's favorite commercial, it has a a great opening premise.
