Hey guys,
I've been thinking, and realizing that I answer a lot of the same sorts of questions/give a lot of the same sort of advice about getting into the business of creating and selling original magic, so I'm thinking about putting together a sort of FAQ/general advice page on my website. If I do this, are there any questions you'd like to see answered, either ones that have appeared here at the Café a number of times, or that you'd think would be of use to those new to this business? --A

Aside from all of the general points that you have mentioned before, Andy(all of which have been of great help), an issue you might want to discuss is the subject of crediting and how to go about the process of it. That would also be a way for people to check and see if they haven't reinvented the wheel, so to speak.

Any other thoughts? This is something that will be a little while coming, since I'm currently swamped with work on a show for the NYC Fringe Festival that I'm sound designing, but if there's enough interest, I'll definitely go ahead with it.

Andy,
I have some routines that I would like to publish. I'm not sure that I am going to try to profit from the endeavor, at this point. I'm more interested in protecting the original portions, so that the moves, etc... will be credited to me in the future. It's actually a respect thing, but I'm digressing. How do I go about copywriting and/or publishing my material for these reasons? Thanks for any help. Eric Grossman

Are they routines that require gaffs that can't be easily and quickly constructed, or things that anybody can make up easily (or that don't require special props at all)?
As for copyright protection, it's something we've discussed many times here before. Simply put (you can look for futher details), there is generally NO legal protection you can get for a magic routine. Copyright will cover your specific written explanation of the routine, or a particular scripted performance of the routine, but not the method or the effect itself. The only thing that can sometimes protect part of a magic effect is a patent, but that's prohibitively expensive in terms of money, time, and effort. Publication can help to establish credit, but how best to do that depends on factors of the effect in part relating to what I asked above. --A
