I will next use the dollar sized Chinese Coins for Jim Zee's Okito Box. I already ordered the $8 thin Chinese Coins second from the bottom on the left: http://joemogar.tripod.com/id22.html I like how the thin coins are duplicate on both sides. But will the thinness of only 3 coins interfere with the effect of the Okito Box? (up to eight thin ones can fit in a box). If only three thin coins will interfere I will order either the dollar sized $8 Chinese Coins with the dragon or the dollar $20 Chinese Coins. But both are not duplicate on both sides. (All the dollar sized Chinese Coins are in the bottom left side in the corner of the page. |

So depending on which routine/s you perform some boxes will work better than others. I have several types of boxes and for the most part I can perform most routines with all of them. However for one of my routines, the height, weight, and the fact the lid doesn't over lap like most. The Buddha boxes work best for that pictular routine. So, that's what I use most. I wish Buddha's came in dollar sized. If you check out Dr. Sawa's box. it has special features in it, that others don't. One effect possible effect with this box, is you can visually see the box slowly fill up with coins, or slowly vanish with no cover. The Beyond Okito, has different features yet. Idon't have one of these just yet, but Hope to have one soon. David Roth's set is made with a thicker rim for doing his coin box work. I would try them all out if you can. At least that's what I'm slowly working towards. Joe

I have several of the Dr. Sawa dvd's. It was great eye candy to see him share his art.

Very, very interesting Joe. My challenge is I am not performing close-up on a regular basis like I used to because of the economy. I am really a stage/palour performer. I have had Boston/Okito Boxes before I never kept up with. What's inspiring me to keep practicing with what I ordered is competing for close-up contest. If I am influenced to take it to a higher level, I will order more type of Boxes. Thanks.

Can't recall exactly where I got mine. I do remember searching around the net quite a bit. Wish I could be more specific, but I've had it for years. Now, the poker chips/turnover box (wood) I got from Tabman and they are excellent. I know he's battling some health issues and had previously sold the name and product line. The box and chips are listed and pictured at tabmantables.com No, I did not build the chopper. It is a "Texas Chopper" with a high dollar custom paint job. The bike belongs to a buddy of mine in Texas. The background of the photo is Offats Bayou in Galveston, TX. I ride a black and chrome Electra Glide Classic. |

The Jim Zee boxes look great. Have to remember that source. Sure is nice of everyone to throw in and help out.
IMHO it really doesn't matter if the boxes look like something "real life" or not. We are in the biz of the unusual. I follow Tommy Wonder's lead and just call it a "magic box." Never had any questions. Just like they don't question if I pull out a couple decks of cards, hardware, rope, a magic wand, sponge balls or whatever. People expect magicians to have a bunch of weird stuff on them. Goes with the territory. Bottom line: to each their own and whatever works best for you is what you do. |

I just had a lunch with Xavier Belmont and he shoowed me two types of Okito boxes in $ size with several variations. On one type the lid overlaps the box itself. On the other (rarer and IMHO better) type the box and lid sides are, vertically, perfectly in line with one another (check the drawings in Bobo if you don't understand the difference). Then he makes sub categories with Okito and Boston boxes and, within these sub categories, he makes magnetic lids, slotted lids, slotted Okito boxes, doubly slotter Boston boxes. These are not shown on his site.
These have the Rolls Royce quality that Xavier Belmont wishes to maintain. If there is any defect which he may encounter like every craftsman, he, unlike some other craftsman, discards them beforre shipping

Here's a thread I started awhile back http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=3 There's been more stuff published since I started that, plus all stuff that hasn't been listed yet. so it definitely needs to be updated. Good luck with your contest. And, let us know how you do.

I'm ashamed to admit that Jim "Zee" Zachary coin boxes had slipped from my memory. These are really nice Okito and Boston boxes but, as mentioned previously, I have a personal preference for the type where the lid doesn't overlap the side of the box as can be seen on some of the drawings heading the Bobo chapter on Okito boxes.
Now a preference is not constitutive of a general hierarchy or superior craftsmanship.

@ Mystre, I am working on a close-up act that involves dollar sized coins. I want to have phases using the Okito/Boston Box included. Of course I do not want to copy a published effect. So I will put together my own routine from studying master manipulators of the Okito/Boston Box. And thanks for starting that one thread you mentioned. I forgot about lessons of performing the Okito/Boston are in so many books/VHS/DVDs I already own. All I have to do is get the dust off of them.

Personally, I've never been 'called' on an Okito Box - I tell people it's a mobile ash tray (complete with lid) that I use for a crafty cig given the smoking ban that's now in place. It gets a laugh and takes the heat off. Moreover, it's only a box with a lid - and totally examinable.

I bought a Buddha dollar sized box at Blackpool last year for £20, which I thought was very reasonable. Got it home and tried it with some of the moves on The Box routine from Eric Jones as the guy on that used a dollar sized one. Summary is some things were much easier, angles on others didn't work for me
