Someone in our club (IBM Ring) is telling me that the SAM and the IBM are "aligned" with each other. I'm not quite sure what that means. He goes on to tell me that KIDabra (http://www.kidabra.com/ - the Association of Family and Kidshow Performers) is not aligned with the IBM.
His reason for bringing this up is that he believes that someone who is a member of the executive of the local SAM club should be allowed to be a member of the executive of the local IBM Ring, but someone who is a member of the executive of the local KIDabra Chapter should not be allowed to be a member of the executive of the local IBM Ring, because they're not "aligned". Any opinions on this? |

Hi, Gordyboy -
I don't understand what "aligned" means, either. The IBM and SAM are separate organizations, as are KIDabra, the Fellowship of Christian Magicians, and the Deaf Magicians society - I'm sure I missed a couple. Of these, the I.B.M. and S.A.M. are the largest. Membership and/or executive status in one does not extend to the other, but there's nothing to prevent a KIDabra officer, for example, from becoming an officer in local S.A.M. or I.B.M. clubs, as long as the officers belong to the respective organizations and your local assembly or ring doesn't have a bylaw provision that excludes dual board membership. You'd have to look at your local bylaws to get that answer. But that's a local issue and has nothing to do with an "alignment" of the S.A.M. and I.B.M. You may belong to as many or few magic organizations as you like, and many compeers do. Still, IBM and SAM clubs do combine, which may have led your friend to think they are "aligned." I know of several combined clubs. In one club, the officers of the combined club must belong to both organizations; in another, the combined club has one set of officers, and each club under the combined umbrella has its own officers.
