Oh wow...what fun...
I picked up a copy of Bro. John's Hal-Deuce-Ination at Haines when I was in Cincinnati last month. It had been sitting on my desk, unopened, since. Today, I finally broke it open, and mastered it in about 10 minutes. Tonight, I showed it to my 15-year-old daughter. You know, the one who is real blase about everything... When the deuces changed into the 10s...she did a pronounced double take...which is far more than I could ever expect from one so cool... Bro. John, thank you once again...I generally don't use gaffed effects, but the handling and the set up are fantastic. If you're lucky enough to come across a copy of Hal-Deuce-Ination, I heartily recommend you pick it up. It's an old effect, I know, but wow, what a punch!

Anything by Hamman is likely to be outstanding. His book, "Secrets of Bro. John Hamman" (Kaufman) is, IMO, one of the best card magic books of all time!

Look out for the Hamman videotapes from Houdini Magic that detail his packet tricks and come with the required gaffed cards.
They seem better value than buying the tricks individually. Of course, they are all in the book. Paul Hallas |

I'm lucky enough to have an original copy of his 1957 treatise, with LePaul. It's wonderful to see the thinking and the insights that went into tricks like the Mystic Nine, that really set an entire generation of magicians thinking.
