Do you think a Johnson silver 64 Kennedy steel core coin would have as good "attracting" power as a shimmed coin by Todd Lassen/Jamie Schoolcraft? Basically is the size of the shim larger if you have one custom made?
Thanks, Stevie D

Custom made will give you just that custom the way you want it. I think the regular is fine as long as you have a magnet that justifies the meens

I think it's the good thread to ask the following question. I got some shimmed coins from Roy Kueppers recently. One is english penny, the other is a US half dollar. The latter is strongly attracted to my Raven, but not the former. Why ? The only difference I see between these two coins, is that the english penny is thinner than US half dollar. But this tells nothing about the thickness of the shim inside these coins. Would it make a difference ?

MH1001 , although I am no expert in physics, I seems to me a magnet will seem to attract more strongly to a larger piece of ferrous-metal than a smaller one... what I am trying to say is the thinner English penny shim is the reason it 'sticks less' than the half.
If you have any biology or chemistry questions, I'm your guy Hope this helps. Cheers |

That was also why I suspected coin's thickness (I don't know much about biology and even less about chemistry). But when I said that to Roy, he says he will make a special english penny, that is thicker than usual ones, if I pay for an usual english penny. I said I was definitely ok. He didn't reply to me, although I asked several times. Ideally, I prefer not to purchase another ma****ic coin since I like letting people touch, examine the coins, so it's better if I don't give them a shimmed + a ma****ic one or they will figure out. |

I once owned a shimmed English penny from Johnson Products many years ago. It was thicker than an ungaffed Penny.
Don't know if that's any help but just thought I'd mention it as your post reminded me of it. |

I can't say I'm happy with that coin. I never dropped it, but that may happen eventually, as it's so weakly attracted to magnets. There are risks associated with it. |
