Bobby--
Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about your experiences with SpeakEasy! Jen and I absolutely love when our work has an inspiring and positive effect on others. I'm so glad your wife was "game" to give this a go! I hope you continue to have many more successful years communicating (secretly and otherwise!). --Harlan |

Dan,
Good to hear from you. We just practiced with a large handful of change. I told my wife, everyone she gets right will go into her piggybank. She got nearly everyone right. It is a good system, and I was amazed at how you handled the crowd at the fair. It took a lot of quick thinking to get out of the binds they were putting you in. Bobby

Not sure if Dan is still floating around here, but others who use SpeakEasy, do you find yourself adding layers to it?
As my wife and I are working through this process, we are finding ways to add things slowly. First we started with basic numbers and objects. Then we moved onto coins and bills and dates and serial numbers. We are modifying the lists in ways that make sense to us. When you look at a code like the Zancig Code, it is extremely complex. I am sure one day, my wife and I will have developed a very complex code, but it will all be based on the SpeakEasy system, and it will be expanded one category at a time. Bobby

Bobby--
That's exactly my intention with SpeakEasy. I designed it to be simple enough to put to immediate use, yet flexible enough to expand with your experience. As you know, the heart of the SpeakEasy system is based on something intrinsic to our very being... so, applying it to the world around us should feel like a natural extension. I'm thrilled you and your wife are taking this as far as you can, and I look forward to hearing more about your successes! --Harlan |

My wife and I performed SpeakEasy for the the first time tonight, and we got a great reaction.
We combined it with a comedy mindreading routine from Aldo and Rachel Colombini and after everyone had a good laugh, we knocked it out of the park with an incredible display of mindreading. Someone tried to trip us up, but because the system is highly flexible (might I say it is jazz two-person mindreading?), we were able to get around it. Thanks, Dan and Jen. Bobby

Hi Bobby,
Is that something Aldo sells? I'd love to hear more about the comedy routine. Thanks! -- Never mind... I found it! Great idea about combining some comedy mind reading with Speakeasy!

Tim,
My wife thinks we might have gone a little too long with the comedy stuff, and next time we will probably shorten it a little. We were performing at a picnic to thank all of the volunteers who helped out on a two-day event to educate city people about horses. My wife was one of those volunteers, and we decided to perform the act. Because the comedy portion has a feel of being unstructured, we really did not add a lot of structure to the SpeakEasy portion: Pull out a coin, my wife tells the coin and the date. Pull out a bill, and my wife tells the denomination of the bill and the serial number. And, we did some cards. My wife and I have enjoyed practicing SpeakEasy, and it is nice to finally get a chance to perform. Bobby

Dan,
Something I might add is the fact that my wife has mostly been uninterested in my magic. She has been dragged to a lot of lectures, and she has seen more live magic than probably all of the residents in our town combined. Yet, she is really excited about SpeakEasy. She is looking forward to getting out and performing, and she tells me nearly every day we have to practice. You, my friend, have created a monster! but in a good way. Like you, my wife has performed in a lot of theatrical productions in school, college and in the community. She has served on the production side, too, as a production assistant, assistant director and director. She has often given me advice on how to present something or has given me something better to say. I think with SpeakEasy, you have given her an outlet to perform and participate in my magic in ways she never has before. Thank you very much. Bobby p.s. Something you might consider for those who have purchased SpeakEasy, putting out a practice podcast in mp3 format that people can use for practice.

Wow, I almost got SpeakEasy today on Penguin for $25 in the Coolbox, and on top of that, it was in the five for $99, so it sold for $20. Great deal!

So I learn this can be adapted to other languages, which is great. But is it still easy then? Does the easiness of the system lie outside the language?
I have no partner until now, but I am looking for a system that I can a) use in German, b) easily teach the basics to a not-so-experienced partner (like, for instance, my 12-year-old daughter), and c) go deeper with an more experienced partner. I want to be sure it is something for me before buying, because I am strictly a hobby magician and my magical budget is limited. |

It will take come work and thinking, but the principles can be adapted to other languages. I adapted it to Japanese and taught my 6 year old son the basic method and we used it quite a bit for a few years.
