Just wondering if anyone has ever done a show in two languages.
I have a show coming up on monday, and the owner of the place would like me to do it in Spanish & English. I personally think this is not a good idea for several reasons. The main one being I´d have to do two pretalks and would probably bore one half of the audience and then bore the other. Then there´s the fact that the comedy element just wont work for about half of the audience at any given time. Has anyone done this successfully (or otherwise) ?

I only speak English, but have had my show done with a Spanish interpreter before. It worked out fine but the delay took some getting used to.

I´ve been told I´ll have a split something like 60% / 40% (or the other way round) of english / spanish speakers at the gig. It´s the split I´m wondering about - whilst a skit is done in one language (e.g. compulsive liar skit or any other one that involves volunteers talking) I worry that it´ll be wasted on the "other half" of the audience. I´ll probably just cut the "talking" skits short, or maybe do two halves, one half in english and one half in spanish. It´s not a situation I thought I´d ever encounter.....

Interpreter works. You in 2 languages not so much.

Yeah, the languages are not a problem to me - it´s the audience not having a common language that I perceive as a possible problem.

I have never done it, but I have seen an Irish hypnotist, Zac Powers, doing a show in English and Gaelic. The thing about that is that everyone who speaks Gaelic is fluent at English, so if he had a problem he could fall back to the first language.
The guy is retired now, so I don't know how you would contact him.

Well, if nothing else I think I´ve learned from this that it will have to be one language or another for any subsequent gigs.....
Thanks for the input fellas.

Most of the shows I present are bilingual - at the start of the show ask people who speak englis to raise there hands, do the same for the other language (in my case Afrikaans) and then structure the show in such a way that you mix the languages. With the induction I stay in the language most spoken and then merely combine suggestions eg - you are impersonating a washingmachine / jy is'n wasmasjien - same suggestion two languages and the show should run without a hitch

I ended up doing the show of hands - I had about 100 spanish speakers, and about 10 english speakers.
I did the show in spanish, then afterwards I did a little bit in english. The spanish part went really well, the english part was a lot shorter as I only had 3 volunteers, two of which I dismissed and I only had one young lady to proceed with. She was rather shy.

Well done. I am jealous - we are a single language country, and I could not do a show in Spanish. I can do elements of my kids show in French (I worked the ferries) but it is not easy straddling languages, and my hat is off to you.

I don't do stage hypnosis only walkaround mentalism with a lot of suggestion work...
But they're almost always bilingual, depending on the Audience of course. English and Malaysian.

Bien hecho entretenador mago! I am a spanish speaking native and sometimes I'm booked because I can relate to my groups in "E-spanish", but it's not fun changing gears back and forth. Uno o el otro is always my preference not simultaneously. It's a mental distraction for me. I will go for mostly visual effects when I'm booked for these groups.

I have done hypnosis shows in English and Spanish at the same time several times, with no problems using hypnotic language techniques with both. It is actually better for the show because it gives me as a hypnotist an image of great power.
For the induction I still do both languages at the same time, alternating orders and sometimes, with easy words such as numbers, using them indistinctively for all the volunteers. So, I think doing it in two languages is great and makes an outstanding show for the audience. Giovanni. |
