I have NO relation to SharpMagic2011, but he currently (6 Mar 2012) has for sale on e-bay a few sets of the larger 1.5" Bounce/No-Bounce balls. I've purchased a few sets, and they work great, unlike another set I purchased there where the "no bounce" ball bounced pretty well! They are from the 1970's and were produced by B.F. Goodrich, and he supplies a photocopy routine by Bev Taylor.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/sharpmagic2011/ Some routines for the Bounce/No Bounce balls: LarRue/Spangler Bouncing Back book Daryl's New Millennium World Tour notes Chad Long's Some Other Stuff notes Also, I've heard that Greg Wilson has a routine for the Bounce/No-Bounce balls; does anyone know anything about it? |

Someone please answer me this about Bounce/No Bounce Balls;
Am I incorrect to believe that the no bounce ball is not supposed to bounce at all, except maybe very slightly at best? There are two vendors on ebay, well, one now, but both had/have a video of the no bounce ball not bouncing at all, one very slightly bouncing. I had bought a set from one of the vendors and the no bounce ball bounced about a foot, when I wrote the seller about it, their response was this; "The no bounce ball couldn't be no bounce at all,because this is related to the technique of performers, and the table where you perform also will affect its effect," So I wrote the other seller to ask about theirs, and their response was this; "No, here's the real deal. All bounce, no bounce balls will bounce depending on what type of surface you are using and what type of force is exerted. 90 percent of magic is presentation... not the props you use." Okay, no kidding about the presentation thing, but their videos show the balls either not bouncing at all, or only bouncing slightly on hard surfaces. So are they right or are their products poor knockoffs they are trying to justify? Thank you.

Everything can be made to bounce. So yes, a no bounce ball will bounce if there is enough force put behind it or the surface it is being dropped on is unable to absorb the kinetic energy efficently.
I have found it best if you just drop the no bounce ball instead of throwing it to the ground. Also the colder they are the better they work. So don't keep it in a pants pocket where it can draw heat from your body.

My no bounce ball barely comes off the table, even with force. I have the small version and use it as a bar bet. I bounce (the bounce one) into a shot glass on the bar. Then bet that the other person can't do it in 2 tries. I then switch the balls and the other person always uses some force and it never bounced more than an inch at most. I bught them at Diamonds Magic in Massachusetts, they were put out by Paul Diamond many years ago but the shop still has some kicking around there. I think they're pretty fun and a quick change of pace from performing magic during the evening.

Here's a cute bit to use with the bounce/no bounce balls....its quick and is a throw-a-way.....which I like:
"Last week I was in Toys R Us and saw this Super Bouncy Ball in the clearance counter. It was priced at just 10 cents......so I called the manager over and asked her..."Why so Cheap?" She told me that it was a factory second.....and they could only guarantee it for 100 bounces." Now you do the bounce bit, saying.......97....(bounce)....98 (bounce......99......(bounce)......100! (bounce) Do an in-hand switch, giving the other ball to a spectator, saying here try it).....(THUD)!!! I know this sounds like a stupid bit, but trust me...it works....people get a kick out of it.......and as I said....its a throw-a-way... |

Nicholas, I do enjoy Scamschool, I use a couple of the quarter bets off of that series. It's fun to throw some randomness into the mix when performing, especially doing strolling magic. I liek to leave people with some stuff to "figure out" when I go on to the next table. (depending on the crowd and situation of course)

Hey Rick~ Now I wish that I had not sold my No Bounce ballsl!
I did so little close up and casual, while on the road all those years, that I finally red lighted a lot of stuff that I was not using. Are there any good sources these days. I think I bought mine from Paul "I'll sit on you!" Diamond. but Paul is "off the road" as far as I know. I kept my Kennedy half dollar "bump out". --It's another "throw away" bit. Ditto,I've kept the Sudbury BIG PENNY! --I had picked up a whole roll of them, but sold them a few at a time at lectures.

I'll show you the ones I have when I see you in January (I Hope!). Mine are BIG...about twice the size of the ones Darryl sold me years ago. |

I got mine (the large ones) from Daryl http://www.daryl.net a few years ago and he still sells them. I am currently working on making a set but I have been side tracked.

I borrow $20 bucks from someone, then give someone a chance to win the person's $20. All they have to do is bounce the ball and catch it...

I'm using a steel ball bearing and a high bouncing ball, both painted with the same copper paint spray (for cars). The steel one really doesn't bounce and produces a "heavy" sound.
The patter is that magic can give a soul to the most inanimate things. The main movements are the Vernon Change Over Palm and the Shuttle Pass to be able to always drop the ball from the same hand. The routine then shifts into the Scott Guinn version of Silent Mora, Frank Garcia, Dai Vernon, Johnny Thomson, Danny Archer routine with a color change using a feint to get the additional ball from the pocket (check with Ellis Stanyon lessons on C&Bs or Terry Guyatt's one cup routine, or do a short one ball routine making the ball travel to wherever you placed the additional ball). It then gets into Dr Daley's Chromosphere routine with some bouncing and some not bouncing balls but ending (rather than empty hands: magic is generous, not frustrating) with a large Sponge ball expanding between the hands where the balls did blend and let their common soul grow into a new lighter world... The color illustrates nicely the fact that magic can give soul and intersting differentiations to what may initially appear as uninteresting.

Thanks Rick (and the rest of you "legerdemainiacs"!--i.e.: "crazy" about magic!) for the ideas and sources.
I'm still hoping to get to G-Bay in a few weeks Rick.
