I know this has been talked about in the past but it has been awhile so I thought I would bring it up again. I love this simple effect and am going to put it back in my act. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get paper to make it. I have tried the big box office stores but can only find 2 1/4" paper. I always used 2" but can not find it now. Also what other types of paper do any of you use for this trick? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you Steven |

I use news paper, columns cut from the classifieds, all print and no photos. Never used anything but newspaper.

Exactly. You could use the columns of a phone book if you can still find them.

Years ago, Tannen Magic was the only dealer that made and handled "Clippo", the cut and restored Newspaper strip.
I believe the originator of the effect used Newspaper and that is what the books recommend as well. I have seen only one entertaining routine with this trick that flowed very well from cut to cut. It was so long ago, I do not remember the performer I am referring to. I never owned it, so don't know if it was the standard patter routine or not. I believe it was best to use the Classified Section of a Newspaper, as they have lines to use as guidelines for cutting the strips. I suppose newspaper was used originally because newspaper was inexpensive back in the day, and Classified Sections were much large then they are today. |

On of the reasons to use a column of newsprint is that a column is about the right width and the busy printing, without a lot of white space or photos, hid the fact that a section was cut out. It better concealed the working so to speak. As Bill mentioned, newspaper was plentiful and inexpensive back in the day. It is another item that is slowly going the way of the Dodo bird, half dollars, English pennies, and pocket knives into extinction. Douglas Magicland in Dallas was another shop that would sell the things made up. It justified the $1.00 price back in the 60s.

The best clippo routine of all time was Blackstone's "Why is a Fire Engine Red?" I wish it was in print somewhere.
LONG add free newspaper columns are getting HARDER and HARDER to find. I used to use one for my newspaper prediction, and when I tried to do it for friends recently, I had to go through about 3 sections of the LATIMES to get a column long enough to make the trick interesting. Sadly, people just don't read something if it's that long anymore. |

Back in one of the issues of Genii, Jim Steinmeyer published a trick called "The Sliced and Restored Rope Trick" which he did a version of Clippo with a cut and restored rope plot. He used just regular white bond paper with the "printing" of the instructions on it. I have done the trick just as he describes and it works very well. Just use white bond paper.
You can find the instructions for Clippo in Gene Anderson's book "Newspaper Magic". |

I can think of at least three books, that I have, that have clippo in it.
Mark Wilsons, Gene Anderson's, and Paper Magic... I can't remember, but would be willing to bet it's in Tarbell too. I do it in kids shows, every show. Have a piece of newspaper, cut a strip, cut it in half, put them together and cut again. Then ask the kids to think of a magic word, point and scream the word. Then magically the paper goes back together. Do it again.. the kids get louder every time. Then do it on angle like you made a mistake, yet it still works. Now tell kids that they are warmed up and go right into T&R newspaper and have them point and put a whole sheet back together. Works like a charm. Randi |

Wilson's book also does a version with dollar bills.
It looks good, and if you just make one cut, scotch tape will recoup your investment.

Thanks all for your helpful comments. I am going to go ahead and use the newspaper. I just hated using it because it was messy to make up a bunch of Clippos. But as always I guess I was looking for the easy way out. I really need to be less of a procrastinator and just put them together. Please if there are more comments keep them coming. Randi I do like your idea also.

If you let the newspapers set a bit, the ink will set up better and it will be less messy to make.
Use a rotary cutter and straight edge to make up the strips. They do not have to be all "treated" at that time. Just treat them as you need to make a few up. Richard

Hey Makeupguy, I'm not familar with the Blackstone routine, but does it go "well, fire is red. And when there's a fire it's in the newspaper. Newspapers are red too." And so on. Is that the patter he used. If so I know all the lines, just don't know how he would have worked the routine. |

Guys,
Never heard of clippo and had never seen it before. I truly accidentally stumbled across this thread by doing a search and mispelling what I intended to find. I had to go on youtube and type in clippo just to follow the thread, and I was blow away. This thread needs to go back to the top!! DAT

The words to "Why are Fire Engines Red" can be found in J.G. Thompson's Miracle Makers.
