I am considering purchasing a Morgan Slippery Sam. Is the gimmick expanded to fit over standard size Morgans or is it normal size but this type of gaff will fit any Morgan dollar?
Thanks. |

Oh sorry Octo Sun. Guess I'll find out some other way then as I have a life and probably will never get to 50 posts.

Yes, Mr. Tech, all of us have lives here. Sorry to hear your attitude. There are many great guys and gals here who are extremely helpful. Who have "followed the rules" posting 50 posts or more; helping one another; the purpose of this Forum.
I guess we're not going to be hearing much from you here. IMO, you are really missing out.

I am new here as well & I have a life too. My life however includes magic - it is a very important part of it. Therefore I consider my time here well spent. I am also glad there is a 50 post requirement to access the secret area - that keeps out the lurkers & secret seekers. If you are truly a magician you should have no problem with this policy! I have only been here a short time but that is long enough to realize I want to stick around. I agree with Atom3339, you are really missing out...

I hate to disagree for sake of attitude but he really is not asking for secrets he seems to know what a slippery sam is and is only asking if its made to fit a specificly gaffed set of coins or will it fit the ones he already has. I will agree with Mr Brio, ask the seller. it seems that differend coin gaffers make thier gaff differently. Now if it was worded "what is a slippery sam?" then I would agree he needs 50 posts, that is asking for a secret.

Well, Poof, his question was answered soundly and logically yet he seemed to have a condescending attitude implying his life is more important than others here and he's too busy to post a mere 50 posts for deeper answers. His loss! I was referring to his attitude in his reply; and it appears at least one other agrees with me.
There have been plenty of hit-and-run posters on the Magic Forum attempting to satisfy their curiosity. One of my points is, in the long run, the TC is going to miss out on the spirit and comaraderie of this Forum that MOST of us respect and enjoy and are thankful for.

I still feel the way I do about my answer.
maybe I'm to abrasive as someone called me in an older post. but certain things should not be talked about the way that user posted his question imo. Mr Biro is correct, they should contact the seller for that info. |

I agree with you, that is why I said I hate to dissagree for sake of attitude - I meant his - I was just dissagreing with the notion it was a big secret being discussed when a simple answer by Mr Brio was enough

As a new poster I'd like to stick my three cents in. I've already learned a lot here and hope I've been helpful. I'm not sure of the difference between secrets and general info so if I overstep please let me know.

Yep - so stand by for the most searched term on Google for September 2012 by the general public being 'Morgan Slippery Sam'.
I dunno..............all this exposure. "We're doomed I tell yee.....................doomed!"

I believe the general public can not be bothered with actively seeking out stuff on the forums and even if they do or even if they chance upon the discussions, chances are they will not recognize the items when seen in real life. However it always pays to be slightly cautious

Some magicians believe it's okay to expose secrets, some believe it is not okay to expose secrets.
I believe if you expose secrets you are taking the risk of alienating most magicians; because, IMO, most magicians prefer to secrets between themselves. After all, it's the only Art that includes secrets within its very definition.

If anyone was offended by my response to OctopusSun I apologize. I also apologize to him personally. I was trying to be more sarcastic then offensive. I was just getting frustrated with the whole rules thing. I think we should be able to talk openly about anything magic related. I really don't think there are laymen out there looking for secrets to magic tricks and gaffs. I think mostly everyone looking for answers are magicians or people that aspire to be one. Anyway, I only wanted answers to my questions so I don't go wasting my money on things I will not use. I have a drawer full of them. So again please everyone accept my apologies!

I was reading this interesting article about exposure the other day. The magician was making the argument that the profession would be benefitted by more rather than less exposure because if those who see magic as a challenge rather than an art have an easy time satisfying their curiosity, no one would want to waste their time studying those secrets other than those who are magical enthusiasts who are a large part of the supporters of Magicians anyway. Thus, exposure of magical secrets would serve also to separate the true magical artists from the "bunglers" who would no longer have any interest for spectators. Was this article written as a reaction to YouTube, Penn and Teller's magic, or even the masked magician? Nope. It was written in 1927 by J. F. ORRIN in the Magic Wand.
I would not suggest facilitating exposure, but perhaps worrying a little less about it wouldn't hurt. Orrin wrote that "The discoveries of modern science have brought to our notice the existence of forces more marvellous than any conjuring trick. I refer chiefly to electricity and, greater still, radio." Magic survived and flourished after 1927 and will continue to do so despite YouTube and Google. Barry (Merc Man) Allen's comments are well taken. Can you imagine anyone without a significant prior interest in Magic looking up "Morgan Slippery Sam" on Google? I can't. Common sense here, I think, is the best guide to what is and is not exposure. |

I think that some muggles do occasionally search for magic secrets - if they're bored and have the time. I don’t think that many are doing that, and most who have usually forget what they "learned" unless they have a fairly strong interest. and if they do have such an interest then it's probably not a bad thing.
While I don’t think that anyone here should go out of their way to expose true secrets, I do believe that some go a bit overboard with asterisks at times! Just my opinion. Plus, most magicians here still have no idea what Steve Dusheck's "Slippery Sam" really is. (Hint - it is not the half-rim shell gaffed coin that most seem to think it is!) Jim |
