Hi Jim,
Can you tell us what some of your favourite effects for use in an upscale restaurant setting would be? Thanks John |

My favorite all-time effect in any strolling venue is Ring Flite. Bar none, it has been the most effective piece of magic for me in terms of being a reputation maker as well as getting me a _lot_ of private work.
I also have recently been having a lot of success with Coins Across. I've used one of David Roth's routines for years and always liked it, but in recent months, have begun doing it with dollar coins rather than half-dollars and the routine has taken on an entirely new life. And, don't let anybody tell you any differently - the Invisible Deck is still one of the strongest pieces of card magic you can do for lay people and the numerous methods to try and eliminate the gaffed deck have never even come close to the traditional method's straight line to the high-impact climax. |

Thanks Jim.
Which Ring Flite do you use, and why? |

I've used a Ring Flite manufactured by Allen Sherer, a very talented walk-around performer in New York, for years.
The reel is always reliable - I've never had one snarl up - and it has a high torque. I've used it with heavy college rings and even a World Series ring once with nary a problem. Allen can be reached at (845)578-5629 if anyone is interested. The price is very reasonable. |

Thanks for joining us here Jim.
Is Allen Sherer on the net? I may like to purchase one of his Ring Flite's. I live in the UK. Thanks |

I don't believe he has a website, Simon, but his mailing address is: 154 Eagle Ridge Way, Nanuet, NY, 10954, USA.

Where can I find the Roth coins across routine that you use?
What sort of coins and gimmick (I assume) are you using? I'm also curious --why do you think the reaction to the dollar coins is stronger --more difficult to manipulate or to hide anything? |

The routine is David's "Shelled Coins Across" which also more than broadly hints at the methodology. I use Eisenhower dollars, currently, with a little help from Johnson Products.
It's funny - I've done "Shelled Coins Across" for years with half-dollars with favorable reactions. However, I picked up a Eisenhower dollar shell at an auction and tried it with the bigger coins, just to keep myself amused. Howerver, I was amazed that the reactions to the trick grew proportionately to the size of the coins. Why? Don't know...but I've been using the Eisenhowers ever since. Plus, they also make the trick more visible to larger tables. |

I'm considering doing a coins across since you've suggested it. So far, I've done well with Kohler's reverse matrix, 3 Chinese coins off a ribbon, and an Okito box routine.
I've looked up my old Tannen's tape with David Roth's coins across routine --I also have Cody Fisher's tape, wherein he credits David Roth as a strong influence in his coins across. Assuming you're ending with the gaff, how are you ditching it? Dave laps it, but that's not practical for my circumstances. |

I use a wand extensively in my close-up work and after I remove the gaff from the spectator's hand, I spin the wand with my right hand (which is now holding out the gaff), tap my left hand and tap the spectator's hand. I then place the wand back into my pocket, ditching the gaff at the same time.

If you don't mind sharing, where did you get your wand? I have been looking for a good quality wand that would fit in my pocket.
Thanks, Bama Gambler |

Bradley...just a figure of speech. I was talking about Ring Flite being my strongest effect in terms of audience reaction and I said, "Bar none, it has been the most effective piece of magic for me in terms of being a reputation maker as well as getting me a _lot_ of private work."
That just means that including everything I perform, Ring Flite is the strongest. However, "Bar None" is a good name for a trick; perhaps I should invent it... |

Dear Jim,
You mention in another thread that once you like an effect you look at its angles. You don't want it to look good from the front but be an education to all other tables behind you. You mention above that a Ring Flite is one of your favourites. I don't know the details of your flite but mine is ring to back pocket. This obviously has problems with angles. Does yours have angle problems? If so how do you get round them in a table hopping situation, etc? Regards PT

bad judgement. |

I keep Ring Flite in my right rear trouser pocket. I always wear a jacket or a custom-made vest that's a bit longer. Both cover the pocket in question quite nicely.
