Hey!
What are some other coins in existence that are a contrast to a silver coin, but the same size as the 20 centavo coin like you see for Scotch and Soda? Any input would be appreciated. I want to get a custom set made, but I don't know where to start looking at these. Thanks! -Kerry |

I'd ask TWOCAN, PT, here. He'd probably know AND may be able to make it for you---depending on what you want.

There are some bronze coins from Spain that are the same size as the Mexican 20 centavo.
My advice is to find a good coin dealer, and go through his "junk" box. Most of them have one, coins that are worth 30 cent to a dollar each, and find a coin that you like and that will contrast nicely. Good luck! |

I just came back from a local coin shop and I found an old 1835 large cent that is exactly the same size. Most of them were a bit smaller, but this is perfect. I bought myself 2 nice thick silver walkers, the large cent that is the 20 centavo sized, and a pretty much matching one. I told him what I was doing, and he let me go through the foreign coin bucket (literally a bucket) and pick out a small handful of coins for free.
I got a perfectly soft 1890 english penny which is nearly black, two 1973 five pesos, which are a bit larger than a half dollar but not quite dollar size, an additonal 20 centavo, a Guyana dollar coin, almost dollar size but larger than the pesos, and 3 half corwns, which are just larger than half dollars. Sweet deal. I plan to go back to pick up some morgans, and pick out some more matching coins to make a set or two. Now I am going to get my custom scotch and soda made, with the large cent insert. I'll let you guys know how it goes. |

Cablerock, The Mexican centavo coin is just a hair smaller then the american half dollar and best used as an insert to scotch and soda or an unexpanded sun and moon set. Its best to use a slightly bigger coin like and English penny type cent and just shave it down a hair to fit ,
Cheers PT

Lassen had the Peruvian Llama coins remade (much nicer than the originals) for this specific purpose. He has them in brass and copper, though I have yet to see the copper llamas used for any of his gaffs thus far. I'm thinking the copper llamas would look spectacular when they darken up a bit.
The english penny is larger than a half dollar and looks extremely reduced when cut down for this, and the old American cent is a bit small. I remember that because Lassen stated that he had to expand them a bit for some sets he made with Barbers years ago. I think that is why the 20 centavo coin was so over used, it is the only easily aquirable coin that is exactly the right size for half dollar sized insert coins... barring the above mentioned llamas now in existence. |

I actually did find a large cent that is definitely exactly the same size as the centavos. Not sure why it's different than the others we looked through, but it's the same, and I think it's going to be great for this. |
