There are quite a number of silk holders in the market. What do you use to produce a single silk which is stolen from behind your jacket.
Presently, I use the Tony Clark version but sometimes I have difficulty in looking for the corner to produce it. Aside from that, it doesn't pop as fast as I want it when produced. Any better ones you could recommend?

I have never tried it myself but the video by Vito Lupo Neo-touch (or something like that) shows one that is awesome...I think you'd have to make it yourself as I don't think it's on the market BUT if you get a chance to watch the video, you WILL see how great it is. I too have problems with the Clark holder, this one,as Lupo shows, eliminates all problems. I'm not much of a craftsman, therefore I have not made one for myself, although it doesn't seem difficult to make!!!

I too, agree that the Clark holder is very difficult to use. I threw mine away out of frustration. I also feel the advertistment is a bit misleading. It is advertisted as the Ever Ready Silk Dropper. It is a holder, not a dropper.

I simply use a single billiard ball holder to produce a silk 24" in size then just produce it from my hand after some misdirection.

All,
If you are looking for a silk holder, Canadian magician Matthew Johnson has an excellent set of lecture notes called “Smooth as Silk." I purchased the notes from Hocus-pocus about month ago. Here’s the information from Hocus-pocus: Direct from the working repertoire of Matthew Johnson, it's smooth as silk! How to build your very own cost-effective case/table, how to make a terrific silk clip out everyday stuff, the real work on silk rolls, working with glitter, switching silks during your act, and more. There are even four complete routines ready to add to your act, including work with a change bag and the color-changing records. Also included in this booklet is a great four silk production finishing with a blendo. This effect alone is worth the price of the manuscript and is taken directly from Matthew's act. This is real world silk work that you should not miss! I’m constructing a silk routine based on a combination of two routines in his notes. His case/table consists of tool case that can be purchased from Home Depot or Lowe's and a Eureka table base. What makes his case/table so valuable is how it’s constructed to allow direct silk steals. I purchased a professional looking (22x16x6) black anodized aluminum case from cases by source, a company in New Jersey. If you want to see it here’s the link,http://www.casesbysource.com/merchant.mv......=BL22166 Overall, these lectures notes are well worth the purchase. Combine these notes, Geoffrey Buckingham’s book “It’s Easier Than You Think” part two and DVD by the same name with a Topit, you’ll have deadly weapons in your arsenal. One Love!

I use a holder from the polish manipulator Arsane Luipin. This is a great holder if you don't jump around too much. It comes in a set of three holders and a gimmick to prepare the silks.

Duane Laflin sells two varieties of winder/holder/droppers. They are different and nice. They are not listed on his site, but they are available if you call and ask. His site is http://www.laflinmagic.com.

The best silk holder is "Vito Lupo's Pro Silk Holder" It holds up to a 24" silk rolled ready for production.
I seen him at Abbott's Get-Together in Aug.2003, he said he is not making magic any more but does have about a dozen of these holders left and would be willing to sell some. His other silk production is a copy of of Carlin Rose silk production that was sold by Supeme Magic. His version again could use a 24" silk and was maid much better. This device is a sleeve set up that you may not like. I don't know if he has any of these left for sale. You can PM me if you want his email address as I don't think I should put on the site for anyone. You are all correct that TC's Dropper is a holder. This is a poor remake on the original silk winder/holder that is made of in metal. I had Carl Smith of Owen's make me 6 sets of the original in 1981. They are only about 3" long and 3/16" in dia. This smaller size lets you pull the silk free much easier. The only place I can find a discription on loading the holder is in Rice's Silk Ency. I don't think TC's picture discription is correct. Bill Mystic, Thanks for the case site, I been looking for cases on the web for months but could never find anything. I think this is every magicians solution to all cases. They even have ATA cases listed. WOW!!! What great reference. Thanks alot. I think I will be able to take my show on the road now. Bill Just checked hocus-pocus no notes by Matthew Johnson come up, or under the title Smooth as Silk. Bill |

Hi all,
Sorry for the long delay concerning the "Smooth as Silk" lecture notes. Matthew Johnson is now a member of the magic Café. I sent him an e-mail concerning his notes, maybe he will reply soon. The silk holder mentioned in his notes are available from Wal-mart in regular and mini versions. Also, I don't know if you all are aware of it but Geoffrey Buckingham’s book “It’s Easier Than You Think” part two, have a way to have your suit jacket or vest un-buttoned completely, yet conceal a silk or ball holder. The way he gimmick's suit jacket or vest is on page 24. One Love!

Hi All,
Great to hear that you guys are interested in "Smooth as Silk" and that you have a thread going about silk magic (I love silk magic). I guess the reason I like silk magic is because it is very cost effective to put an act together and also very visual. Back to "Smooth as silk". In the booklet you will find a section about constructing a silk clip and in that section I also talk about how to find the end of the silk during performance. The silk clip I describe can be made for a few cents, you could probably make about 20 for a dollar (Canadian). The booklet also includes 4 full routines with silks, talk about glitter loads and also valuable information on how to construct a great case table (The one I use in my act!). FYI, in 2003 I got 1st Place at the PCAM Platform competition using some of the material from this booklet. The booklet also comes with an 11x17 photographic instruction sheet to make learning the stuff much easier. I have not been in the Café for long so I am not sure how to go about giving you guys the information so that you can get hold of "Smooth as silk", I don't want to tread on any toes! My products are with Murphy's Magic in California and they have exclusive distribution rights, at present I have not re-released "Smooth as Silk" through Murphys. The only place to get the booklet right now is through me. Having said all that, if you guys want to keep this thread going and chat about silk stuff that would be great. Walter, I am glad you enjoyed "Smooth as Silk" thank you very much for buying it and if you have any questions let me know. Bye for now, Matthew Johnson. Click here to view attached image. |

If you are haveing trouble with getting a hold of the end of the silk, sew or tie a bead in the corner. Vito Lupo wraps about a half inch of tape around a corner.

I also wrap tape around the corner of the silk so that it is easy to find!
Consider using coloured electricians tape, you can match the colour of the tape to the silk so that after you produce the silk you cannot see the tape. Let's keep this topic going! Matthew. |

Another method is to pierce a hole in a TT and push a corner inside, tie a knot on the inside or taps down. Now roll the silk on the outside. Rubberband or place in a holder. Vito Lupo holder is perfect for this method.

Jack Chanin describes his JC silk holder/winder and attaching system in his book Grand Finale. If you are familiar with his work, you know it's practical, and astounding.
