Have you ever wanted a great way to attach your table tops and shelves on your stand and roll-on tables with ease.
For many years I have been looking for the split hinge. Instead of knocking out the pin in a pin hinge, and putting a wire coat hanger through the holes, I wanted an easy way to do it without having to mess with a coat hanger or a locking pin. Well I finally found them, of course by accident while looking for something else. No more cutting heads off finishing nails or putting extra weight on the table with blocks of wood to hold a shelf. Want a removeable top for your close-up case. Well I found it finally! http://www.ebay.com/itm/260949734424?ssP......36.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/260917953746?ssP......36.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/280855681284?ssP......36.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/260993030609?ssP......36.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/260892216304?ssP......36.l2649 |

My local Ace Hardware has some of these. They are called "Lift-Off Hinges". They have a lot of stuff that was left over from when it was a local hardware store, so maybe that's where they came from - I'm not sure.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Actually, They were originally made for salesman's cases (fiber cases)so the top would come off
There is another version (not pictured) that limits the travel to 90 degrees. I use them on doors for example like my Elastic Lady. Another illusion I use them for is the shadow box. They make assembly and disassembly mush quicker but they are too light-weight for a tear-down subtrunk. In that case I would recommend the Blackstone hinge. The best way to install these is to space them apart with slightly more geometrically room between each one, This way your not struggling to align every pin at once, you can start the first one and work your way across.

The 1st time I seen these was on my Akai Reel to Reel stero tape player I purchased from Japan when I was in Viet Nam, in 1967. So after getting tired of hauling a 70 pound tape player around, I tore it apart and saved the take-a-part hinges. Been looking for a supply of then ever since.

I used to see these on cases for old-style manual typewriters. The lid would open and lift off and the typewriter used without removing it from the base of the box (which you could do if you wished).

Bill,
Great find, I too have seen this type of hinge before but not in so many styles. Thanks for the links. I can think of many uses for them. Gimpy

The Canadian Link is below but there is an American store front too. http://www.leevalley.com/en/hardware/pag......41,41250 This link seems to be screwed up. Search on "Lift-off hinges" and you'll find these. Thanks for the information. Doug |

They are also called open barrel hinges. A search on Google turned up several links.
They can also be made from brass hinges. Anneal the brass hinges with a torch, then use a flat bladed screwdriver with the hinge in a vice. Just be sure to get both barrels opened the same amount, evenly across the barrel. We techs used to make these when needed in the theater. |
