When my niece was 6, I taught her the paddle move. She fooled her mom, but immediately had to reveal the secret. That's really the only sleight she was able to pick up on at that time that she got any good at. I was able to teach her a few gimmick tricks however. The coin change box, dice bomb, nail through quarter etc. The fact they are self working made it easy to teach and to learn. Those are what got her interested enough to learn the paddle move. Now that she's older, I'm sure I could teach her more intricate things, but unfortunately she lives several states away now.

When my daughter was five she could do a couple of tricks with simple props--ball vase, basically just using the shell, and she could make silks and spring flowers appear in a chick pan. She's not that interested in "fake muggle magic" now at twelve, but recently I needed to meet a minimum order requirement so I bought a small, cheap plastc drawer box, which she likes to show off to her friends.
Quite a few of those old Robbins EZ Magic sort of things a great for kids to learn with.

I started with the Ball and Vase at age 6, and a magic set. A magic set will give her a chance to try a few different tricks and discover which ones she can do. Also consider searching 'Julians Magic School' on YouTube. Aussie guy teaches a few tricks which suit smaller hands/little magicians.
