Anybody have advice on the best way to clean my Professors Nightmare DX ropes from SEO? They are white and lines are beginning to show. I am afraid that I might damage the ropes in the washing machine.
Thoughts? thanks JR |

I don'tknow what dx ropes are, but think dye the ropes white rather than clean em.

Or use upholstry cleaner that comes in a spray can and wipe with a cloth.

I soak mine in cold water with a little bit of Dawn dish washig soap for a day or two and then hang them out to dry.
Dyeing them white would be an interesting thing to try. If such a thing as white dye existed.

"Rit" dye comes in white, there is also white shoe coloring.
My one problem with the four nightmares is that it had very little to do with the traditional nightmare but also the ropes them selves are not a universal standard rope. I would like to see that configuration with a cotton rope which would allow easy replacement rather than having to recolor the ropes. This would also allow me to incorporate my other rope routines with the set.

No such thing as white dye. Dye is transparent, so a white dye would have no effect on the color you place it on top of. Dyers like to say that white dye is called water.
You can remove dye from fabric. This is called discharging. Discharging agents include chlorine bleach and sodium hydrosulfite. Synthetic fabrics cannot be discharged, but often cotton can be. Rit does not manufacter a white dye. The do however make a Color Remover as well as something called Rit® White-Wash. Neither of which are dyes but bleaching agents of one sort or another. White shoe colouring is more akin to paint than a dye. It would most likely make the rope too stiff to handle well. soking the rope in mild detergent or a very dilluted bleach is still your best bet to restore your ropes to a workable condition. Four Nightmares is a great effect and the ropes are very well made. now that it is back on the market I'm tempted to pick up another set. That way I'd have my practice set that I didn't care about it getting suop worn. And then the performace set which would last quite a while since I don't have to practice with it.

I'm just curious......as long as I've been doing magic I have NEVER washed rope....I just tossed it when it gets funky...
I just wonder if the rope, when washed, feels good enough to use again and again? (meaning being supple enough)... I've probably got 1,000 feet of rope around and just start fresh when I need to make up a rope set. |

I don't know about specific Rope Sets but for cotton ropes, I have several and I wash and break them in in a cycle.
Some ropes are best for a certain type effect or practice at various times in these cycles. When they get "fuzzy" you can make marks on old rope to help in practice (and the marks show better on clean rope). I preserve the life of the ropes because I get fond of my Toys and want them to last. You'd have to break in a new Rope anyway so why not wash one? -Mary Mowder |

Kids do touch my Rope and I always have one on the floor by my chair waiting for commercials so yea, mine do get dirty.
Apparently I should spend more time vacuuming my carpet and less time playing (tried it once, didn't like it). -Mary Mowder |

I soaked a really old & dirty rope in laundry detergent for a while, then rinsed it off. I was surprised at how clean it became.

On the road, I washed rope (cotton) when I washed clothes. Whites with the whites. Laundry detergent, Dried in dryer.
Nylon washes, too. I carried two sets of Nitemares. Spares, in case a kid with dirty hands handled it (YES!!!) I've used same ropes for the last 3000+ shows. (If I need to pad, I do part of the Geo. Sands routine.) I'm not cheap! I'm just thrifty~(Boy Scout) Besides, I use a thick rope that I bought from Fran Marshall about 30 years ago, It's no longer available. DX??? SEO??? --I plead stupidity.

For Mr. Oslund
http://www.seomagic-usa.com/catalog/ I have been using clothes line rope from the Dollar store, 50 feet for $1. Hows that for being cheap?
Et tu, Spartacus?

Right Spartacus! As long as it works! For my knots routine, I use the heavy stuff, I bought 4 "hanks" from Fran Marshall about 30 years ago. She called it TV rope, but it's no longer available. For years, Forsyth Twine & Cordage, in Forsyth, GA. made rope for magicians. As cotton got more expensive, 'they' put less of the 'core' cotton strands in and the rope got skinnier. This type of rope is "kern mantel" (I think that's from the German) For years, magicians could go to the factory and buy odds n ends of rope CHEAP. The last time I was coming North on I75, I stopped to buy rope. The factory wss closed (out of business). In my book, I'll tell the story of the great rope swapping "trick", between Fran Marshall and Dick Oslund. Later it became a "trick" that Greg Bordner and I did.
