The dynamic of magic and mentalism seems to be ever changing with technology becoming a major player in what is possible these days. How many of you take advantage of the new avenues that are available to you or do you prefer to be "pure" as they say?
My own belief is that I will try and do whatever I can to relate to my audience so I combine current tech with classic methods. The freedom this allows for is incredible and makes for some extrememly memorable magic and mentalism. I also mean this from a presentational standpoint. Do you try to adapt your presentations to feature current events? Do you keep up with what is going on with the world around you? Does your scripting leave enough room for some "improv" so your show seems less "phoned in"? Your thoughts?

As an electronics engineer, I have many ideas of how to create gear to perform many older tricks that did look really magical at that time.
But today, with the advances of technology, most of the public is already aware of what can be done thanks to Hollywood special effects. I believe that we should either go completely away from technology or either completely embrace it in our tricks. Using it half way would only make spectators believe that we are using better technology than we really have and spoil the effect. Where is the magic to read at a distance a note written by a spectator when everybody with a smartphone is already sending wirelessly written message all day long. |

I understand what you are saying, patrickmg. I think it is important if you are going to use technology in your performance that it should be invisible or justified. Unless you are demonstrating something where the technology is the effect and that is perfectly ok as well such as the Wellignton Switchboard for example.

I like to combine classic methods and high tech methods in my shows. I wouldn't want to do just one or the other.
I'm currently having lots of fun with "Mental Killer" and Promystic's "Evolution". But, I always include some of my old favorites - tricks I've been doing for 30 years. So, I try to take advantage of some the new technology, but I'll always love the classics, as well. Robert |

Robert,
As the creator of Mental Killer I am always thrilled to hear how well it plays for everyone that uses it. It is a primary example of making technology "invisible" The same goes for "Evolution" another incredible tool to add to our toolbox if you will. I too still perform effects I have been doing for 20 years or more and I am always looking for ways to improve them and make them even stronger. I believe a performance is always a "work in progress" Just like a musician, the more you olay your instrument the better you will get.

Psypher can be a very useful device and be employed to facilitate many impossible looking effects. I would consider it lo tech using a classic method.
