Did not know where to post this ? So FX seems kind of relevant ,I build magic for a lot of shows and I am currently building for a Pinochio stage show ,one bit of stage fx I cannot work out is how to create a wearable growing nose ,creating several big props but this one prop has me stumped! Any suggestion? Thanks!

How about a balloon inside a nose like stretchy cloth of some sort. A tube can feed air into the balloon with a battery operated pump.
Just a suggestion. Don't know how doable it would be.

I guess you can always imply the growth...actor is behind a scrim, the audience sees the shadow...the nose on the shadow grows, then the actor comes back out with a different appliance on.

Possible but it would require the actor to wear a full mask, then breathing would be a problem. Easiest solution would be for the actor to hold a mirror in front of his face and sleight of hand a mask with a large rubber nose piece. Just play a "stretching" sound effect. You might want to check out Danny Sylvester, Sylvester the Jester, he might have another idea.
The ballon idea would also work but require an actor to shove a tube in his nose out his mouth to a regulator and small air canister. Plus the ballon has to be heavy duty and covered in a panty hose material. A low cost solution is a telescopic toy pirate telescope. Paint and modify. Slight of hand a nose on and off using magnets. Additional idea, buy 2 Pinocchio glasses with wood looking nose.
Buy a wood slide whistle. Requires you to slit one nose to be able to accept the other nose. The slide whistle would be in the center. It will work and it also makes a sound effect.

If you had a sound effect as the nose "begins to grow", your actor could then cover their nose, as if trying to prevent it from growing further. In this action, perhaps they could expand a telescopic nose? This puts them in control of the growing and prevents you having to make a really complex prop. The sound effect begins a moment before they cover their nose and motivates this action. Something like that would be simple and maybe even more powerful than a piece of visible mechanics?

Adapted Fantasio appearing candle? Not sure how you would attach or control it though!

I don't think you'd have to worry about the candle coming all the way out of something that is tapered and smaller. You could control it with a string tied on the inside and knots on the string for various lengths. Maybe... take that nose, cut the tip off, gut the top of the candle... take out that metal thing. Put the candle inside "after you paint it." and glue the tip of the nose back on.

I realize that this is an ancient post, but I go through them to see what issues magicians are having/have had, to see what solutions they used. This is how I would deal with this situation:
How about using more than one nose appliance? Just prior to the growth, have him step behind a wall or scrim, apply a strap-on nose (the strap can look like part of the joinery of Pinnoccio's face), the light projecting a partial profile shadow that the audience can easily see. On cue, have him turn his head into more of a profile. The shadow nose will seem to grow before the audience's eyes, and when he steps back out into full view, his nose is already of that larger size. The advantage of working in a theater is that you have controllable angles and lighting. Make the best use of them! |
