Is it just me or does this book seem VERY advanced? What would anyone reccomend before diving into this?

Derek Dingle's work is advanced sleight-of-hand magic that requires a working knowledge of many of the standard card and coin concepts and techniques. After digesting and working through basic texts on card and coin work (i.e., coin magic -- Bobo, Kaufman, Roth; card magic -- Hugard, Giobbi, Vernon), you may be ready to begin to tackle Dingle's magic.

Harry Lorrayne's CLOSE-UP CARD MAGIC would be a good starting point.

I assume from the initial post you already have the book?
It's a good book, packed full of stuff. Keep reading, you will find stuff in there that is not too technical also, Cards Across Licked at Last, Card in Balloon, Too many Cards and those are just off the top of my head. It is a book to go back to again and again and you can always learn something from it. No doubt about it, Mr. Dingle is a "master" when it comes to sleight of hand and is fun to watch. I was playing with something from the book the other week, and I bought the book 20 years ago. That's the beauty of books. Bet not many people are going back to view videotapes they bought 20 years ago. If you want to put the time in, all the moves required ARE taught in the book. It was probably "THE" book in 1982 when it was released. Paul Hallas. |

I feel that there is a little bit in this wonderful book for everyone.
Please don't over-look the "Super Floating Card". This should be one of your favorites and really looks magical. No ITR here. he.he. Tom

I was just reading through this book last night.
Derek was considered by many people at one time to be the best in sleight of hand. A couple of the magicians listed in the Thank You part of the book used to either study from him or session with him all of the time. It also says in the book that one of Derek's routines was most likely in the working repertoire of every close up magician at that time. My favorite effect in the book is "Roll Over Aces". I do agree that it is an advanced book, but it is also very good magic. Even if you aren't at that level yet, hold onto the book because there is no doubt that you will find something in there somewhere down the road.

While the book is full of wonderful routines and worthwhile tips and sleights, my favorite effect is Dingle's version of the mental card fan force. I learned his version years ago and have added my own personalized touches to it. In my opinion, this one idea from Dingle's book is one of the strongest impromptu mental effects you can present with a pack of cards.

Check out his "Super Ball Card Rise" (I can't remember the exact name; I'm not near my library right now). I played with it for a couple of days and had the greatest time!
