Hello Friends,
I've been asked to speak at Awana in a month or so. This would be for the 9, 10, 11 year olds. Though I've been doing magic for many years and perform a show Magic of Music regularly, I've not much Gospel magic. I spoke for the youngest Awana group recently and greatly enjoyed it. I have a good repertoire of illusion including stage equipment and have frankly been wracking my brain for a good application to speak on and apply the magic. I've turned it over to God in prayer for inspiration and that has lead me to this posting. I'm eager to hear some topics and suggestions. You don't have to give your routines. I totally respect ownership of that. I'm hoping to hear from some of you with suggestions of topics, specific Bible verses, suggested illusions. I trust God to lead me on from there. Many thanks in advance. Blessings, Michael |

What illusions do you have? It may help to formulate ideas.

What is the theme?? you need one theme first, then build from there. Non-gospel routines to engage, amaze then ONE Message, and a closer. Both Oz and Wilde and Dunae Laflin have published books with lots of ideas for programs.
Recently I've used :- Trust - chair suspension Jesus is the Way - Life is a Puzzle (Duane Laflin) Locked in sin - escape from handcuffs, straight-jacket Story of Daniel - writing on the wall (Ali Bongo), Daniel and the Lions (Laflin - adapted to include more volunteers in lion masks) Noah and Ark - Invisible Paint to tell the story, pull out Noah (Wonder imagery) then animal silks and finally a 50' rainbow

How much time do you have to perform at AWANA?
Professors nightmare: God uses us equally Stratospheres: Priorities McCombical Deck: God of second chances Block Penetration: Power of prayer These are just some thoughts, I hope it helps. Mark

Hi AmazingCarrington - If you will give me a list of the tricks/illusions you so comfortable with that you can perform the mechanics effortlessly while incorporating brand new patter, I would be glad to give you a Gospel application for that trick. PM me if you like. I feel what is lacking most times in Gospel Magic is that it tends to be fluffy "how to live your best life now" themed, and really doesn't teach Biblical principals, doctrines and most importantly doesn't teach Scripture!
If I were constructing a presentation for this event, and this age group, I would not waste the opportunity to CLEARLY present the concept of THE GOSPEL. We are doing a great many Gospel routines that do little more than "entertain the lost, so they enjoy their ride to Hell". If I perform a "Gospel" effect, I make sure it is supported by scripture verses that are quoted as part of the patter, and preferably, it teaches an important truth of Doctrine or Theology. We construct too many effects that the MAGIC is the centerpiece, vaguely colored with some biblical words or characters to make it "Gospel" magic. If you would like suggestions along those lines, feel free to give me a holler! Blessings.
WHAT IF you wake up tomorrow with ONLY the things that you THANK GOD for today?

Every gospel effect I perform always has a scripture verse(s) which ties everything together to make the message as clear as possible. The magic is there just to enhance the message NOT overpower it.

Hey Michael it's great that you ask, it shows you are open to greater things than self. I've been doing children's Gospel magic for many years and found that the impact and the fun often comes from multiparticipant routines. I've used the Gospel according to the 3 Little Pigs, Jim Austin's Noah routine, Church bloom ( blooming bouquet and 4 comedy wands)and others. Think of the popular kid show routines you have done in the past and how these can be applied to the AWANA program. Isn't great when God really wants you to succeed???

Our Awana just ended last week and will resume again in September. I'm not sure if amazingcarrington's Awana program runs all year long or not. Most end over the summer months.

I performed for an Awana Awards Banquet tonight. Used my "classics" - Exploding microphone with Funkenring (David Ginn idea), vanishing and reappearing silk with TT and 2 silks and comedy bits, torn & restored napkin with "surprise" ending (see Tarbell), Afghan Bands with 3 spectators cutting the bands (either a Bill Severn or Marvin Kaye routine...been so long ago cannot remember), fire Bible, Freddy the Rabbit, Magic Coloring Book with comedy bits (black hand gag, comedy broken fan and wand, production of a spring skunk from top hat, etc), mouth coil (YES...from my mouth!), Rubik's Cube Die Box (with resurrection message to close). A good time was had by all. They're called "classics" for a reason!
