I was tempted by the devil himself...Marshall Brodien, and his TV Magic Cards...

Growing up in Florida, we use to go to the parks a lot. I remember seeing a magic shop at Disney. I was always fascinated by the seeming miracles that magicians could perform. However, it wasn't until I was in my twenties that I really started getting into magic. An older friend of mine who knew I had a growing interest in magic showed up at my house one day with the complete set of Tarbell and I was hooked. This was about the same time that David Blaine was hitting the TV.

Is there anyone who gets interested in magic solely as an adult? I mean, most (if not all) people here seem to have positive/fond memories of magic on TV as children. Anyone start by hating magic then 'grow into it', so to speak?

I didn't hate it, but I didn't see any magic preformed until I was 22. And I didn't try it out for real until I was 25.

When you say you didn't see magic performed, do you mean live or on TV or at all? Sounds like you missed out

I never saw it at all. The only thing I got was one of those bad kids sets when I was about 10. I read about magic and its history before I was 22, but never saw anything.
I wouldn't say I missed out. I spent that time doing other things, r/c planes, choir, plays, physics, math. Plus I wouldn't of had the ability to keep a commitment at an earlier age. So it is great that I didn't worry about it until later in life. And by the way if I did happen to see anything before that age it wasn't good enough for me to remember. Plus my parents aren't really into magic. |

I got a great Adams magic set as a kid, then sold it at a garage sale. (Wish I had that kit now!) Then in my teens I learned a couple of card and coin tricks. But I think the birth of my daughter, coupled with seeing what some of the new generation was doing, that really sparked my interest.

Got a magic set at 8, but do not learn much from that...
Time flies... Saw Copperfield's TV special 15 years in magic, the Ace Assembly astonished me emotionally, first time saw a piece of card magic can be so strong. Time flies... Saw David Blaine's Street Magic TV Special in 1997... astonished by what is close up magic, not particular prefer magic in the street though. A magic shop opens in city where I lived in 2001, props, videos... spent a lot to get back what I should learn... Open my own magic shop in mid 2005, unfortunately it last only 3 years. Met legendary David Williamson in 2009, our adventure began including assistant of his lecture tour and two TV performance in 2010 and 2011. Witness the greatest magician alive - Juan Tamariz during FISM 2009, FISM Asia 2011 workshop. I rethink what is magic? In one sentence, I would say, 'I owe Magic too much, and magic changed my life by let me meet many legends.'
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.

I got bitten by the magic bug when I was in Cub Scouts. My brother and my best friend's brother got into magic and local performances and I knew I could do anything they could do! Got to do my first public performances at Blue & Gold Banquets and school. Although I didn't pursue magic seriously later on (things like girls and rock & roll got in the way)I did always have a keen interest. After having kids and getting them involved in scouts, I became their scout leader and Cubmaster, so I was responsible for putting on the monthly pack meetings. It gave me an opportunity to perform some magic again for a few years. Fast forward almost 20 years and due to the death of my youngest son I have custody of my granddaughter and found that she loves for me to do some of my old tricks for her. This has led to a decision to get serious about it again and start out entertaining kids, since I have found myself spending more time with 6 year olds than I do with the kids my own age!

I can't remember when I first got into magic because it seems like I've always been amazed by it. I remember seeing Doug Henning on Broadway and being totally bewildered as to how he could have done the effects. I think when I got out of college and started working, I started getting more into magic as a performer. I'm enjoying teaching a group of 4th and 5th graders after school for a few weeks. I did a very simple card force and I had previously taped my prediction under one of the kid's chairs. The screams and amazed looks reminded me of just why I keep doing magic. It's putting a smile on my face even as I'm typing this.

I got started very late in magic at age 50! I liked watching it on TV, but never thought I could perform it. Then I met a local magic shop dealer (Joe Pons) who really showed me close-up magic; and guided me in the right direction. At the very same time, my wife taught Kindergarten, so I had an instant audience for manipulations. For close-up, I performed for fellow workers ... and realized I could do it! Michael Ammar's tapes were invaluable in getting me started with cards. Lynn

I always liked magic. I think what I like that attracted me was the cleverness of some of the gimmicked pieces. I like gadgets and to me good gimmicked magic is like a gadget.

MartiniMagic...love the name. Can't tell you how many times a Beefeater martini has made my memory vanish like magic.
As a designer, I'm attracted to the engineering side of magic as well...but am constantly reminded of the rule I must follow on a daily basis..."form follows function." If you want to design an incredible new chair...sure, make it beautiful, but first make it an incredible chair. The same is true with magic. The method may be ingenious, but if the effect is weak...everything is weak. Actually, I take that back. Let's remember that our audiences never (hopefully), learn the method, and therefore, can have no appreciation of it. So, if the effect is weak, the magic is weak, no matter how well-engineered and clever the workings are. Whew. That was exhausting. Time for some MartiniMagic...
