If you knew back in the days of pivng room birthday party shows what you know now about stage performing, would your shows have beem different? Is there anything that you've learned about staging, scripting, choreography, music, how to connect with and move an audience that might apply to the very fluid, never-the-same, up close format of the livng room show?

Hey Ed how are things in Yuma? We still spend our winters in AZ and really consider it home.
Shows in a home can be similar to shows at fairs or corporate work. The guests didn't necessarily come to see a magic show. They just happened to be there. People that specifically go to see a magic show are prepared to have fun, versus people that may have been thrust into a situation where they have to watch a magic show. So in my opinion you need to win them over very quickly. They will be making a judgement of you, an opinion of you and a sub conscious decision about whether or not they WANT to have fun and enjoy the show. In these situations I say open with something quick, not too long, not too wordy and something that grabs their attention. You need to convert the guy sitting there with his arms crossed into a guy leaning forward, thinking 'ok, I'm paying attention now'. Hope that answers your question. Kevin

Next time you come to AZ, let me know and I'll see if I can come tag up with you. Don't come now - we're starting to get into the 100s, so summer is just around the corner.
I've seen that guy with his arms crossed, and the teen with her smart phone, and a host of others. Yah, gotta grab them quick! I was just wondering if there was anything from the stage that would have changed how you did the small shows, and might help us. It's easy to say "that world has nothing to do with this one", but I wonder if we might miss something of great help. Ed |
