I have a homemade version of "X-deck" and "Fred" but in doing some research I found out that my version of Fred is different than everyone else's and to my surprise, I discovered that what everyone else calls Fred, I call X-deck!
Are they the same trick? Just instead of the word "Fred" there is a giant X? My version of Fred is more similar to David Regal's Deja Vu deck, in that I have two decks depending on if the spectator calls out a red card or a black card and second, all my cards have a name on the back - all different names, to then reveal that the one card named "Fred" is their card. Is my trick NOT Fred? Or just another variation? Does anyone know where my variation came from? I don't like owning or performing magic without knowing who it was who invented the effect. Thanks for any advanced insight. * I had X-deck long before I knew David Forrest even marketed it to the public. I learned it at my local brick and mortar shop and it was revealed to me by the owner. |

The two deck "Fred" presentation originated with Scotland's Dave Campbell, and the name 'Fred' was used as a tribute to Fred Lowe. The details of this can be found recorded in the book "The Dave Campbell Legacy" by Peter Duffie. Being a simple method it got ripped off a lot. In this effect, the named card appears to be the 'only' card with a name on the back. It was very popular in the early seventies I recall. It has been re-invented with 'x' on the back rather than a name a few times and of course, different methods have evolved.
