I'd say get it. I was in your shoes 20 years ago when someone sold me Card Shark by Darwin Ortiz. I knew next to nothing. Some of the effects in that book I was able to start learning right away. Others took me a long time before my skill set was up to the required level. Scams and Fantasies is similar in that regard. A wide variety of effects with varying degrees of skill. What they all have going for them is solid construction. I wouldn't hesitate to perform any effect from Ortiz. Many other books can have a range of routines. Many of which I simply simply wouldn't bother with.
If you really need to you can pick up Giobbi's Card College as reference material. But I didn't until much, much later so even that isn't necessary. Further I have never made it through Royal Road either. Ortiz does a pretty good job of explaining the sleights you will need to learn. I'd have to double check but I don't think he explains Faros anywhere but that can be learned through a Jason England or Michael Close download easily enough. Also since he is left handed he can't offer you much in the way of peeks unless you happen to be left handed as well. I think I learned how to control a peek from Amatuer Magicians Handbook but I could be wrong. |

I found something in Mr. Ortiz's essay "Showing or Hiding" skill that I found interesting. He references a trick called "Peek Performance" as an example to make a point. It's effect seems to be that some manipulation happens to the deck while it's in the spectator's pocket. He references it as being one of the tricks from the book.
I was wondering whether this could be an early name for "Remote Control" or whether the trick was dropped from the book. Given the context in which Mr. Ortiz refers to the trick, it seems to be a strong one so it couldn't have been omitted because it's weak. The effect also doesn't appear in "Lessons in Card Mastery." I find that the absence of the trick is a little mystery in a wonderful book full of them. |

But I forgot to make the change in the essay. Peek Performance and Remote Control are the same effect. Sincerely, Darwin Ortiz |

I had also noticed a similar discrepancy in "Designing Miracles" where you refer to "The Fastest Gun Alive" as "Quick Draw" (this is in the chapter on the False Frame of Reference). But that's nitpicking. My real hope was that there was a Darwin Ortiz trick which was so impossible that he didn't publish it in the book it was intended for, nor the next. Anyway, I'm a big fan of your work and it's sad that "Scams and Fantasies" is out of print. Should I hope that in a bit you'd release another book on tricks or theory (or a book each on both!)?
