Hello, I have been doing card magic for about one and a half year and practice almost every day, however I want to begin doing coin magic as well and I don't know where to start. Today there are 2 different products I consider, those are:
David Roth's Expert Coin Magic 1-3 (50 USD) Jay Noblezada's In the Beginning There Were Coins (30 USD) Which product is best, and is the David Roth DVD set that much better? I'm a student with a very tight economy and 80 USD is a lot of money (there are some special rules in Norway where you have to pay 25% extra and about 20 USD extra if something costs more than 35 USD). |

Hi yngvem!
Welcome to The Café! Although both products are excellent, I'd go Roth all the way! Also look into Michael Rubinstein...one of the best kept secrets in Coin Magic! If the Roth vids inspire you, I recommend looking at the New York Coin Magic DVD series 1-16. Look here: http://www.newyorkcoinmagic.net/ Not only will you find the whole series there, you will find some REAL Coin Magic gems hidden there, Like Michael Rubinstein's Encyclopedia Of Coin Sleights, vol's 1-3 and his Knockout Coin Magic DVD where those sleights are shown in performance. OK, maybe that's a bit much. Just wanted to show ya how deep this goes... Doug |

Instead of spending $80 on those two books, why not just check out Amazon.com and buy the greatest coin book of them all for only $12?
Seriously, get "Modern Coin Magic" by J.B. Bobo. It's quite simply the best, and I have not come across a single coin magician who has said that book didn't help them. |

Another good book is Al Schneider On Coins.
Out of the dvds I like Roth. A better dvd in my opinion is Modern Coin Magic by Ben Salinas, it covers Bobo's book. Get that dvd, Bobo's book (try to look for the hardcover enlarged edition it has more material) and Al Shneider's book for around 60-70 which is bellow the cost of the dvds you are looking at. |

I learned 90% of my slight of hand (coins and cards) in Junior Highschool from Bill Tarr's "Now you see it, Now you don't." Last I checked it was about $15.00on Amazon. Its a *great* beginner's slight of hand book with clear pictures and explanations.
As others have said, you get much more for your money from books then from buying videos. Occasionally a video can be useful where you just aren't getting it another way... I was unable to learn a double lift until I got Greg Wilson's "Double Take" video, but save your money for when you really need that extra bit of help.

There's also a version of Bobo's Modern Coin Magic on DVD:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000JQQKJA Eric Jones has a good beginning coin magic DVD called Metal as does David Stone.

Thank you for the answers, and I bought the Bobo book, I found it cheap a place in Norway. Oh and I think that I wasn't clear enough the Noblezada DVD will not be that expensive so, because shipping is not included in these customs rules.

Michael Ammar is a fantastic teacher and does a great job with his introductory videos. I strongly recommend his introduction to coin magic DVD for someone learning the basics. For more advanced work, Roth's Ultimate Coin Magic DVD set is excellent.
Bobo is a great reference, but can sometimes overwhelm beginners who try to work through the entire book. http://www.ammarmagic.com/dvds1.html Hudson |

I found a pdf. file of the book, but couldn't tell you where cause I don't know. Not sure how complete it is but it's a 5mb. file.
If I can find it, it couldn't be too difficult.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

You might want to check out my post under new to magic where to start for some tips. My biggest advice is not to try to do too much too fast. Many beginners get DVDs that are above their ability, and don't pick up some the basics that would be much more helpful. Good luck!!

I have to agree with satellite23, although we disagree on The Prestige. Get Bobo. And if you want to learn David Roth's material, get the book, not the DVD. Keep in mind also that a lot of Roth's material is table magic and not stand up. It can be done stand up, but adjustments have to be made.

I heard Jay's " In the beginning ..." dvd was really good, but no one's touched on it here. I was considering it as well because apparantly how he "teaches" or demonstrates the material is easy to follow. Anyone testify to that?
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I've studied coin magic from Nobleazada, Sankey, Roth, Jones, Ammar, Stone- they are all very good teachers. You will learn some good magic from any of them.
Gotta agree with Michael Rubinstein though. Too many of us try and rush thru to learn all the moves and tons of routines without getting the basics down first. Some moves can take a long time to get down right and there is no way to rush them. I just watched Ammar last night- his intro DVD just to see what tidbits of knowledge I could gather and maybe clean up a technique or two. Its way better to perform just a few routines very well than to perform a hundred poorly. |
