Hello all,
I'm new to Card Magic and Magic in general and I have a probably very noobish question regarding the undercut and will most likely have more questions as time goes on. I bought The Royal Road to Card Magic because people seemed to have high opinions of it on these forums and have been practicing very very basic stuff such as retaining Top & Bottom Card in Position etc. The question I have is wether or not the undercut is meant to be seen by the spectators. By that I mean if it should look like just randomly cutting the deck in half or if the aim should be for the move to not be seen. I know this will be a silly question in the eyes of many, but hey, everybody needs to start somewhere Also, to all the people owning The Royal Road, am I mistaken or is the "Top Card to next to Bottom and Back to the Top" segment in the Overhand Shuffle part the exact same move as the Retaining the Top and Bottom Card in Position described right prior to that? Thanks to all in advance, se`busca |

Don't worry it's not a silly question.
The undercut is meant to be a part of the shuffle and therefore is performed openly. As you make your way through royal road you will come across a few variations of the overhand shuffle which remove the need for the cutting action. Don't worry about those just now though. They will come in good time. The overhand shuffle is one of, if not THE most natural and deceptive ways of controlling cards whilst apparently giving the cards a good mix. Have fun with it. You are right about those two parts of the book. They are EXACTLY the same. Enjoy your study : ) |

Don't get in a hurry, as you read and go though each chapter, it will all come together. Those moves will be combined with others to make up complete sequences of really great card tricks. Don't skip around in the book, you will only get confused. The 1st few chapters are very basic, the books takes for granted you now nothing about handling cards.
After you learn how to shuffle, and then hand over the deck to have shuffled by a spectator, you will have to hold back, as they most people struggle to try and mix the cards. Good luck and stick with it! |
