In a previous post concerning Alonzo Moore (Alonzo Moore Information, Dec. 11, 2011) I detailed information concerning his real name, birth, and date of death. In researching a different aspect of Moore’s life, specifically his beginning in the magic field, I came across some new information concerning his death. Despite what various websites say, Moore did not die on April 13, 1930. The 1930 federal census of patients at the Chicago State Hospital at Dunning list Alonzo Moore, magician, as being alive on April 21.
After some additional research, I found that a correction sheet had been attached to his death certificate. Since Moore was buried in an indigent cemetery, most likely the hospital’s own cemetery which is currently the site of Reed Dunning Memorial Park, and he has no gravestone, the only place to find his true date of death is on the correction sheet of his death certificate. For some reason, the state of Illinois has decided that the death date of an individual, which is usually public knowledge by being displayed on gravestones, is confidential information and can only be accessed by a family member or a person with a financial interest is said person’s estate. In regards to Moore’s beginning in the professional magic field, it was not, as is popularly believed, as an assistant to Edward Maro. He was indeed an assistant to Maro but only after having spent time working under the name “Boomsky” as an assistant to Alexander Herrmann. Although I have not been able to find any specific dates, using available information, I would estimate he was with Herrmann about 1889 – 1893. - Sammy Miller |
