As I mentioned before, one of my favorite authors was Michael MacDougall and as a young man I pick up some good information and learned from his books Danger in the Cards, Gamblers Don’t Gamble and Card Mastery. Published in the late 1930’s and 1940’s, these books were among the very few publications which contained information about card and dice cheating at that time.
MacDougall was one of the first of the modern day “exposers” and billed himself as “The Card Detective.” He would regularly demonstrate his ability at country clubs, exclusive bridge clubs and for well-to-do clients. Although I never saw MacDougall’s performance, I believe he was quite skillful in this regard. For a little touch of memorabilia and a look into a more genteel and refined society, here is a reproduction of a brochure used to advertise his demonstration, this one at the Racquet Club in 1942. http://sdrc.lib.uiowa.edu/traveli....ure.pdf I downloaded the PDF to my desktop so I could better manipulate its size to make it more easily readable. In my opinion in today's private game hustling world, learning from the above three books, plus mastery of a few moves and some actual live game HUSTLING experience, would make one a formidable private game hustler, in any game where the players can deal themselves - and there are plenty of those games still. No disrespect meant to anyone here, but with all the info out there nowadays, with all the discussion on chicanery on a BB such as this and with many people claiming to be in the know????? and writing about what they know???????, how easy it still is for the right person and how much BS and lack of true understating prevails about how these methods are actually used and applied - and that is a big plus for some. |

Sorry guys but that is the link. Why it does not work on the BB is a mystery to me. I don't know how to correct his problem. |

I think we can't just download things from your desktop, it must be uploaded first to the internet and then we can download it from there. News 1943

It's been many years since I have read a MacDougall book and I think he mentions that when he found out he could make a lot more as Card Detective as opposed to being a magician, he made the transition. I really would like to have seen his Svengali Routine because he was noted for it and his routine was geared to selling the deck as opposed to just doing tricks with it. I personally don't know how skillful MacDougall was and don't know if he could do all the moves in Card Mastery as the book cover alludes to, but if he could do the riffle work in that book, then I would take my hat off to him. Seems like in those days a good Svengali pitchman could make a nice living. Since I have the MacDougall books lying here in an open box that I recently unpacked, seems like it is time to re-read them. They were among my favorites and in my younger years, he was the only expose/magician/protection guy in which I had any interest in ever seeing work. |

In the video David says he hadn't broken the ice, or made his first sale with the deck yet. I remember one time when he was talking about pitching to a bunch of magicians (it might have even been the same day that video was shot) and instead of "break the ice" he used the term "wet the towel". As in "I had just gotten started for the day and I hadn't wet the towel yet". Someone asks him "what does wet the towel" mean? So Walker explains it and half the group is like, horrified. LOL! There were kids there and a lot of older folks. I remember seeing one old lady who just had a look of absolute disgust on her face, I'm surprised she didn't walk out. It was classic. Anyone know where the term "wet the towel" for the first sale of the day comes from? |

Cagliostro,
HERE from the 13:10 to the 13:17 mark, you will see seven seconds of film (in color!) of Mickey MacDougall at the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition in San Diego. |
